Either one should be ok with snows...
Drop down to 17 or even 16 inch steelies & get some good tires. The Max may handle launches in snow a little better, but the G35 ( with some weight in the trunk), will be the better handler, snow or no snow.

I agree....
Get the car you want, and get a real good set of snows.
If you get the the G, consider buying a couple packs of shingles and putting them in the trunk for some added weight along with the snow tires.

A set of Blizzaks on steel rims and it really won't matter which car you get...get the one you prefer. I hear lots of porblems with G35C owners finding snows that will work for them though since they have different sized tires and if you change the sizes sufficiently it messes with the VDC and makes the system work against you. I think the sedan owners have had more luck with snows though.

For all you guys who are saying that a RWD car will always suck in the snow...you've obviously never driven a car with a GOOD set of snow tires.
I have Michelin Pilot Alpins on my 350Z and it's BETTER than my maxima...that's right...MUCH better than my maxima in the snow. And I put no additional weight in the back either.
The 350Z has the same size issues as the G35 Coupe. I simply got stock sized (for base, enthusiast, and automatic touring cars) 17in rims and put the stock sized tires on them 225/50-17 in the front and 235/50-17 in the rear...my VDC works perfectly.

Oh...and for the guy who is trying to decide on a new car, don't base your decision on which one would be better in the snow. It's not like you live in Alaska or something. Honestly, out of the 365 days in the year, how many days is there really a significant amount of snow on the ground??? Think about it, it's absurd to buy a car simply for snow performance unless you live somewhere where it snows CONSTANTLY all year round.

I think you probably just don't like SUV/minivan/trucks. I know I don't.

ahh people! can you stop mentioning other cars! this guy is narrowing down cars and you guys are just adding more to the list.
Stick with the cars mentioned unless he asks "or any others..'
I personally think you should get the G35 Sedan. Looks better (which is taste), handles better (fact), you get the infiniti brand, no torque steer because of the RWD-- but you also get a smaller car.
RWD isn't a problem but I won't say why because others already gave you all the reasons.

I would go with the G35 also. It is the closest thing to the BMW these days. But there is no doubt that you will have a harder time in the snow.
But I also have to agree with those who say go with a AWD. Audi is prolly your best choice if you are actually ready to spend upto $40K.

A quick heads up...
If you really like the G35 for it's stable RWD handling and all else is equal in your mind... wait 'til spring or summer. According to an NADA trade publication, Infiniti told it's dealer body the G35 will receive AWD as an option at that time. This is not speculation, but fact.
The Maxima won't be getting AWD anytime soon, it's already snow friendly, but flawed with it's aggressive torque steer.
If it were me, and based on present and past ownership of both FWD and RWD, I'd get RWD (even better...AWD). The drivetrain is simpler, maintenance is simpler, handling feels more balanced and steering feel is much improved. The "tunnel" arguement for me is a non-starter.
Living here in Florida gives me the confidence to buy RWD and not worry about spinnin' out (lived in Chicago and Philly for 32 years, so I know the drill).
But, wait and see about an AWD G35 in the next few months!

or try
... a set of Nokian Hakkepelitta's from Finland, with studs would be even better. My Max pulls out quicker, brakes quicker, and corners better than my former Outback did with it's all season Michelins, or than my current 2nd. vehicle, my 4x4 Supercrew. On a really wicked day with lots of snow or freezing rain..I always for the Max

I have Nokian WR's & they are agressive uni-directional All-Weather Plus tires. Truly great in snow & especially awesome on wet roads.
