High-Price Xenon Headlights Causing Headaches

Below info is from my post on Edmunds.com's Maxima discussions:

For example, in the 2002 Maxima, popped headlight covers don't trigger the car alarm. Nissan has been working with police to combat the problem. The company has added a headlight alarm to newer 2004 models.

The company's willing to consider other complaints on a case-by-case basis. Anyone wanting to prevent a headlight theft can also purchase the anti-theft kit for ~$75 (a special retrofit headlight alarm), plus labor, from a Nissan dealership.

For more information, call Nissan's customer service line at (800)-NISSAN1

From what I know, the 2004+ Maximas don't have the same problem that 2002-2003 Maximas do concerning theft.

This is a 5th gen problem, not a 6th gen problem.

Cool how they decided to implement the anti-theft headlight relays and whatnot 2 years later... at least they should have done this for 2003.

At least they did it now - better than never (even if it's not needed)

I beg to differ about it not being a problem for 6th gens...I remember seeing a set of 6th gen HID's the week they were released on eBay, from a "wrecked car". I bet it will be just as big a problem with 6th gens as 5th gens

I agree it certainly has the potential...........Nissan created the potential problem by creating a "market" for 6th gen HID. They did this by not making HID standard on 6th gen.......why they did this puzzles me........moved the car upscale and more costly than the 5th gen but chose to have HID optional vs. standard in the 02/03 Maxima......

Xenons are standard on the '04 base SLs, and in the 'Driver Preferred' package on the '04 SEs.

I suppose the reason they are optional on the base '04 SE is to have the lowest practical price on an 'entry level' Maxima.

Nissan had to convince Phillips to do this as Phillips is Nissan's HID OEM.

In that case every car equipped with HID has the problem.

The real problem with the 5th gen HID is that they were so very easily removed from the vehicle.

And what's to say that they didn't come from a wrecked Maxima. Let's find facts before jumping to conclusions.

If you want to believe that then...sure every car equipped with HID has this problem.

I am just stating a fact. Contact Phillips and ask them. Do you really believe that Nissan has their own HID manufacturing plant? Car manufacturers are at the mercy of their OEM manufacturers. Look at Ford. Why do you think they put Firestone tires on their vehicles? A Firestone married a Ford several generations ago.

BMW, Mercedes, and Audi HIDs will not get stolen as street racers do not buy these cars for an obvious reason. They can not afford them. Maximas and Hondas (Acura HIDs) are much cheaper.

The thieves rarely care about the housings. Their targets are the bulbs and ballasts. They're worth at least 10 times more than what they can get for the damaged housings.

Hmmm...$1,500.00 a set? Here's what Nissan thinks they are worth in the form of a deduct: Xenon HID Delete -$150

In the article it sounds like they were talking about the entire lighting cluster, not just the bulb. The cost savings is just the bulbs, but that being said it is worth more than they give you.

The article does not specifically state that this is happening to 2004 Maximas.

Can someone find an article that says 2004 Maxima's are being preyed on?

I see your point but if the only difference was the bulbs, and the difference in cost for the bulbs was $150.00, wouldn't they steal the regular lights too? I mean, one's worth $1,500.00 a pair and the others are worth $1,350.00.

I am lost on this one.

What I was referring to was that they are stealing the entire unit, which is why it is more expensive to replace.

Deleting the bulbs off your new car is cheaper than replacing the entire unit. I am sure that the bulbs are worth more than you get when you choose not to get them.

I'm not being very clear. I guess, in a sarcastic kinda way, i'm trying to say that, if the only difference in cost for the units is $150.00 per pair then I would think all the units would be stolen, not just the Xeonon.

I do see your point and it is a valid one.

What I'm saying is that there is no evidence of the 2004 Maxima having HID theft problems. I stated that on the first page.

I read that but are there any articles that show that 2004 Maximas do or do not have HID theft problems?

This question was for the 6th gen bashers.
