17-digit VIN decode
1N4 B A4 1 E 0 4 C 826008
above VIN number off Ebay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2422826674
I don't think this is a hail damaged car due to the serial number above 825000 as discussed in the forums.
First three digit (Manufacturer):
1N4 = USA car (1 = USA, N = Nissan, 4 = vehicle type or manufacturing division)
JN1 = Japan car
3N1 = Mexico car
JN6 = Japan truck
...
Fourth digit (Engine type)
B = KA24DE, SR20DE, VQ35DE
Fifth and sixth digit (model series)
A4 = Maxima A34
A3 = Maxima A33
...
Seventh digit (body type)
1 = 4-door sedan
8 = Xterra
...
Eigth digit (Miscellaneous)
E = ?
C = air bags
...
Ninth digit (check digit)
always 0 to 9 or X to verify VIN accuracy
Tenth digit (model year)
4 = 2004
3 = 2003
2 = 2002
1 = 2001
Y = 2000
X = 1999
...
Eleventh digit (Plant code)
C = Smyrna, Tenn
9 = Fujijyu
5 = Murayama
L = Aguascaliente, Mexico
M = Tochigi
...
Last six digit (Serial number)

FYI.....Check digit calculation (this is getting deep)
The Check Digit, position 9 in the VIN, is used by the factory and law enforcement agencies to verify that a particular VIN is a valid one for that vehicle. It is calculated by the following method:
1. Each number in the VIN is given its mathematical equivalent value.
2. Each letter in the VIN is given a mathematical value based on the following:
A - 1 ,B - 2, C - 3, D - 4, E - 5, F - 6, G - 7, H - 8,
J - 1, K - 2, L - 3, M - 4, N - 5, P - 7, R - 9, S - 2
T - 3, U - 4, V - 5, W - 6, X - 7, Y - 8, Z - 9
(I,O,Q = n/a)
3. The assigned value of each VIN character is then multiplied by the position weight factor as specified in the following:
Position Weight Factor
1st....8
2nd....7
3rd....6
4th....5
5th....4
6th....3
7th....2
8th....10
9th (ignored)...the above VIN check digit is 0 after calculation
10th...9
11th...8
12th...7
13th...6
14th...5
15th...4
16th...3
17th...2
4. The resulting products are then added, and that total is divided by 11. The numerical remainder is the check digit. If the remainder happens to be 10, X is used.
