I can't find anything online anywhere that states that this is true, I find info that says it won't affect anything other than your engine knock.
In my own testing, although I have no way of accurately testing power and the "I feel it" method doesn't hold water with me, I have notice no change in gas mileage between super and regular
One guy on here dyno'd his(4th gen) with regular and the drop off in power was significant...wish I could find it but the thread was kind of obscure so I don't know what to search for. But i don't think the part about being better for the car is a myth.
^ I know that the 350z gained somewehre around 10hp when using higher octane gas, I don't see how it would be any different for the 6th gen maxima. Also, IIRC if you use low octane gas, your throttle body will become dirty much more quickly. I've seen threads where people tested the mileage theories and it does in fact make a difference.

No flames please I'm just trying to make an analogy.
Virtually all cars make more power per cubic inch, cubic centimeter for you youngsters, on less fuel than their predecessors. As ECM technology becomes more and more refined, octane becomes less and less of a factor.
It may be true that a 4th gen will see significantly more power from premium than regular while a 6th gen may not even know that you are doing it a favor by buying it the good stuff.
