There really isn't a base modle of these cars. The SE is the sporty one and the SL is the luxury ones. A SE with no options is the lowest you can go, but most option packages include HID's. All of the cars have projector headlights though.

HID:

standard on SL (luxury model)

Driver Preferred Package (SE only - Sport Edition)

Nissan got rid of GXE trim for the 6th gen.

Well, up here in Canada you can get an SE 5-seat without the leather or sunroof packages. It lists for CDN$34,500 (approx. US$24,680). You get cloth seats and NO HID. Don't see too many on dealers' lots though. This would certainly be our "base model", though it isn't describes as such by Nissan.

yep, the projectors on the Maxima without HID's emit a blue/purple hue at some angles, even from straight on. Just like the projectors on GMC danali's, Passats, Saturn L-series.

HIDs are not standard on the 2004 Maximas. They are a part of the driver's preferred pack which means you can't get HIDs and cloth interior on a 2004 from the factory.

Nissan could have actually saved money for themselves and for the consumers from making HID's standard on all models

Maybe Nissan heard about all the rampant HID thefts and decided to offer both regular headlights & HID's. If you live in an area where there is a really high chance of having your HID's stolen, you'd might want to get the regular lights so you don't have to get your insurance to replace them, pay a deductible ect.

If you feel you are in an area with a low chance of HID theft, then you can get the HID lights.
I don't know if you can get a fully loaded Max without HID's?

Or maybe Nissan did cheap out afterall

Just a thought!

I can't immagine being such a cheapskate to save $150 by deleting sweet lights like that.

If anyone wants to trade their HID's for my regular lights, I'll give them $150.

Some posters seem to have 'overlooked' ocuihs's post early in this thread.

To repeat his post:

HIDs are STANDARD on ALL '04 SLs.

HID's are included in the DRIVER PREFERRED package on the SE.

The ONLY '04 Maximas that do not have the HID headlights are:
1. - Base SEs.
2. - SEs with only the SENSORY PACKAGE.
3. - Any SE or SL from which the HIDs have been 'deleted' when being built. These are recognizable only by noting the 'HID DELETE'(with $150 credit) on the window sticker (or looking at the car from the front at night, of course).

I'm not sure what projector headlights are, other than what the name implies, but my halogens are like torches compared to what I'm used to with previous halogens on other vehicles.

Usually 1 out of 3 drivers will flash their llights at me, thinking I still have my brights on. There's not much difference between the dims and brights. Wondering if the aiming needs to be adjusted.

Anyone w/standard halogens have this problem? or is it a characteristic of 'projector' lights?

Well said lightonthehill... I don't understand why everyone was so confused, but hopefully this puts it to bed.

If Nissan had made HID standard on the 2K4 Max, there would definately never be a potential problem with theft because there would be no market for the stolen HID's. By them producing some 2K4 maximas without HID, they created a market for possible stolen lights.
Still dont understand their thinking with this....upscale in price etc but decreasing luxury items from the 5th gen?

There was a post on one of the threads about what it takes to get the lights out, and it isn't a quick job like it was on the older gens. I don't remember the specifics, but it sounded like a 10+ minute job in ideal conditions.
