Winter wheels - opinions and help sought
Based on reviews on tirerack.com, the stock tires on the 2004 Maxima are worthless in the snow. My plan is to get a set of snow wheels.
To save a few shekels, I am thinking about using 17" wheels. Question: what size is the bolt pattern?
Based on tirerack.com reviews, I am thinking about using Dunlop Winter Sport M3, but no one else seems to carry them. Also, the sizes available are not ideal. Any thoughts?
1010tires.com shows a Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3 that might be acceptable. Does anyone know about these?
I know that Blizzaks are well regarded, but the reviews on tirerack.com suggest that they may not be suited for a performance vehicle.
What are your thoughts? Anyone else planning to switch to snow tires?

The Ontario Provincial Police use a Goodyear Ultragrip as their winter tire. I've driven with them for a couple winters. They are certainly a good winter tire. They do have a reputation for good tread life, and low noise too. They aren't the cheapest tire out there, but somewhere in the middle of the pack. There are quite a few choices.
In 17, the size would be 225/55/17. There aren't currently 17" steel rims available yet. I've tried two different places and both said to check back with them in Sept/Oct. Alternatively a used set of 17" alloys off a previous year Maxima will likely fit.
I was looking at the Blizzak WS-50, this is a good read:

I had blizzaks on my 330ci... They worked VERY well. People I know who drive 328's with the all weather or sport tires have a very tough time going up the slightest incline on snow. Based on my experience, I highly recommend them.
I am not sure if the fwd configuration of the maxima affects how certain snow tires will perform. If so, a different tire may make more sense. I just wanted to put in a positive word for the blizzaks.
I traded the Beemer for an 04 maxi and am also wondering about snow tires. Currently, I plan to make a decision once I test the car out in the snow. Most likely, I will put snow tires on the stock rims and buy new rims and tires in the spring...
