Air filter...

Hey guys,

I happened across an auction on eBay Wednesday for a K&N cone filter than fits on the 00-03 Max's, and it was only $35 so I figured what the hell, it should keep my lead foot satisfied for a while until results come out on which CAI or filter system that is the best. It looks exactly like nick wolff's, only it's red, not blue, so I guess I have a K&N and he has the Apexi? Anyways, I'm just excited about something new for the car! I'll take some pics, if I'm not in too much of a hurry I have to figure some way to mount this thing, I guess I could always fabricate my own at my friends shop out of some scrap aluminum, but I'm lazy, I'd rather buy one

hey man. my filter is actually from jwt from courtesymaxima.com. its only red because when you clean the filter with the K&n filter cleaner it turns red.
to take off all the stock **** you need to simply unscrew the box and the connecting air ram ontop of the radiator. i actually recently made a new mounting bracket. just go to the hardware store and look for somethin that can fit onto the origional mounting bracket and that connects good to the filter. you might have to bend the pieces from the hardware store. its very simple. and i hear you on buying a better one when something cooler comes out. im not feeling the filter itself..... lol

Well, it's officially installed, but I didn't feel like making a bracket for it last night at 11:30 so I just zip tied it to another bracket.

Hey nick wolff, did your car get really, really loud after you put yours in? Man, last night after I got it in and tied down, I crunk it up and drove it like a granny for a minute or two to see what it drove like under normal conditions. It seems to shift smoother and has more reponse now. That slight lag has gone away some. After about 5K though, the car sounds like a race car. Engine noise is really coming back up through the intake and filter. Not a bad sound though, I was hoping to avoid a nasty fart can sound, was hoping for more of a whistle or sucking sound, but I think I can live with it the way it is

One more thing, does your car make a really bad whistle sound around 2100rpm? It sounds like when wind blows over the top of a bottle. Kind of sounds like the throttle body blade is making the noise when it is barely open. It quickly goes after if you give it any gas or let off. I kind of like it, it's not real loud, if I have my windows up I can't hear it so it doesn't bother me, I just noticed it last night when I first put it in.

One of my friend's asked me today if I put a turbo on it. Hahaha, does kind of sound like it though at about 5-6K.

Oh, and I took some pictures here, down at the very bottom...

hey i dont experience the whistling sound on the 04. when i had the filter on the 00 which i origionally bought it for. it did whistle when it was first new and if the engine was cold. you really should get some brackets going for it because the intake tube will wiggle going on the pavement. you should have it secure. my hypothesis is if its loose you dont get an accurate flow of air. but thats just my oppinion

It's not bouncing or moving at all right now. Take a look in the pics, I just posted them. I have it tied tight against the inside of the well where the box was. The hood isn't letting it bounce up and down, I don't hear any knocking noise going down my road (dirt road) so it's ok for now. I'm going to build a bracket for it right now though so it's all good

the car definately respondes better now. the sound is still pretty quiet. but can sound beefier when you open it up to 3000 rpm its a 00 - 03 nissan maxima K&N cone filter. or the 00 - 03 Jim Wolf Technology intake will work fine too. but you have to make new brackets to mount it in place.

Not sure what year filter it is. I saw the auction on eBay and it said it a K&N cone filter for any Nissan/Infinti, but the title had it for a Nissan Maxima. It was only $32 and it had like 20 minutes left on the auction (don't even ask how I found it when I did, I really don't know ) so I bid on it and won. It was from a guy that lives in Marietta, GA, so it was here the next day. If you'll look on the 3 pics I have of the filter itself, the backing plate had 4 holes, but the holes didn't line up to my MAF. Marked off the new holes, drilled 4 new ones, used some 2-ton clear epoxy weld on the 4 others that didn't match, and let it dry. I was tired by then and just felt like putting it on so I went ahead and bolted the backing plate onto the MAF, put the MAF back into the intake, then put the filter onto the backing plater and tightened then up. Slapped that twistie tie on there to keep it from banging around under the hood, so far I haven't heard any banging noises.

I'm not sure what these whistling noises are, it might be from air squeezing in between the backing plate and MAF. Everything else sounds great. Car runs super great now, and if I don't drive like it like I stole it, I get better gas mileage than before. Mine is really quiet at any rpm below 3-4K or so, sounds like it did stock. When it gets above that though, it does get pretty beefy like you said.

ga2000, it definitely makes the car feel like it pulls better. I hadn't had a chance to see how it pulls from 50-100 or so until last night and it definitely pulls alot stronger than before. The temperature should start dropping around here in a few weeks and the last week Gainesville is open is mid or late November so I've got plenty of time. I'm going to let the temperature drop as low as it can, go ahead and get a UDP, and hopefully the guys from TechnoSquare will need my ECU by then, if they are going to do the Maxima ECU's, and it should be running a pretty good quarter mile by then

Hey Quicksilver and Nick, are you guys telling me that I only have to buy the filter. This not a complete intake system...just a filter placed on the stock intake tube. Is this correct? Just curious because I'll do that in a heart beat.

Yup, that's all I did. I saw the filter element on that auction and remembered that nick had one, so I went back and looked at his, they looked identical, so I bet on it and won it. Wasn't even sure if it would fit, but for $35, I made it fit

check out courtesyparts.com and click on the 00 nissan maxima. they should have the filter on their website. but lemmie tell you. its gunna cost around 100 bucks... or you can look around but the fitting on the back of the filter MUST have those 4 holes on it so that it can hook up to the MAF piece. just make sure that it will fit before you go and buy somethin on an auction. or you can just try out the courtesy nissan website. for the true fitting filter

Thanks, my buddy owns a performance shop so I'll get one from him. Atleast I can save some money that way.
