HELP Aiming Headlights
HELP Aiming Headlights
I'm having problems with poorly aimed headlights.
Does anyone have a repair manual or a parts diagram that would show how they are adjusted? I'm pretty sure its from the back of the assembly. Just removing the wheel liner should get me access to it.
Any help would be appreciated. I've been to the dealer a couple times for alignment already but they are doing it in the middle of the day where its hard to see how the light will hit the road ahead. It really needs to be done a night on a dry paved road to see where exactly the cutoff will be. It was too low, now they've cranked the drivers side up too high. Grrr....its just easier to do it myself than take it out of town to the nearest dealer again.
Thanks,
CM.

Well, if they are aiming them, I sure as hell hope that they'd be like any other reputable shop since the 90's and use a Optical headlight aimer. Optical headlight aimers are about the only way to properly aim headlights, and it doesn't matter day or night, rain, sleet or snow. It's all the same. Do you have HID lamps? If you don't that may be the problem.
Nope, just the regular kind. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that device you're talking about supposed to be used with headlights with the three little glass bumps on them? If so, I don't believe that our headlight assemblies have them on there.

Ahhh ha! I found the vertical adjuster for the drivers side headlight!! I had to take out the wheel liner to get to it. Removing it was relatively easy. Just a lot of little fasteners to remove.
In the picture you can see that it is above the main headlight reflector assembly. It is indicated with a red arrow in the picture. There is a similar screw on the bottom of the assemlby, which I would immagine is for the horizontal adjustment. There is a plastic cover on it, so I wasn't able to test it.
Access to the horizontal adjustment is easiest from the wheel well. Though with the right tools you could get in from the top and avoid all of that. If you had a ratchet that only needed a few degrees of turning to work that would be perfect. The adjuster works either with a phillips bit, or a 10mm socket. The socket would be best since it won't strip as easily as the screw.
Tightening it, or turning it clockwise raises the beam. Counter clockwise lowers the beam.
So now, with a little luck my headlights will be adjusted properly!

What you are thinking of are old and outdated.

This is what I'm talking about. You just place it in front of the headlight assembly, like this:

since almost every modern day housing does not support those old school light aimers.

You guys do know that you are making headlight adjustment a lot more work than it really is right? Open your hood and look down to where the adjustment screws are. You will see a a place where a screw driver shaft will slide into and it ends at the teeth of the adjustment screw.(You can see it in the picture I'm posting) Turn the phillips screw driver to the right to lower the beam, turn it left to raise it.

Also, there is not a way to adjust the beam to the left or right. At least on the 07's and 08's.
