Anybody Had to Replace Thier Windshield?

A rock from a semi cracked my windshield on the way home from work today. It hit right above the wipers and before I got home, the crack had spread to the top of the glass.

Anybody had to replace thier windshield for this (or any other) reason? I'm thinking this could be expensive. I think the radio antennae is built in to the windshield, the rear view mirror looks like it hooks into it.

Any feedback would be of interest to me: cost, experiences with auto glass companies (good or bad), what to look out for, etc.

Thanx in advance!

Its not ultra expensive. There is no antennae built into it so that helps keep the cost down.

If I recall, others had theirs replaced for $200'ish?

Could you tell me why the Windshield glass is different for Nav vs. Non-Nav systems? I have the Non-Nav system.

Thankfully, windshield replacement is 100% covered by insurance in Massachusetts so I didn't have to pay anything. I asked the windsheild replacement guy about the two different windshields for nav and non-nav cars. He said the sometimes the cars with nav may have a bit more tint (or vice-versa...not sure).

Maxidriver - The windshield for cars with the nav package may have more tint because Nissan figures drivers with the nav will be straining their eyes looking at the screen a lot more than non-nav drivers. Just my guess.

dafoul1 - I think $200 and 1 hour is better than I would have expected. In fact, I would have guessed about $350 and 'we'll need to keep it overnight'.

Depending on where the nav antenna is, the different glass may mean better reception. Some tinted glass will prevent satellite signals from entering. If the Nav antenna is right above the unit or under the front windshield, this might be the reason. However, I do not have Nav but instead I bought a Garmin iQue GPS and the antenna receives signals quite well under the front windshield.

The glass in the building where I work has this special tint and it's impossible to get a signal on my GPS device on the inside of those windows.

Yeh, I just had my windshield replaced. 3 weeks after I got my car, a rock from - a helicopter - hit my windshield. My insurance covered it. I've heard some places will replace it in your driveway or work parking lot (less controlled environments). I opted to have it done in a specialty garage and I demanded a genuine Nissan (CARLEX) windshield. The guy did a great job! Good luck.
BTW, My old Max windshield is still great (albeit a bit sand blasted) after 14 years & 165K miles on it!

Where did you guys get the glass? I just called my local Nissan dealer and they quoted me $480 (insurance claim), but I talked them down to $425 for a non-insurance claim. I told them that I've known others to get theirs replaced for ~$250, and they said that was impossible since the glass costs them $380. Should I be talking to a glass dealer? I was thinking about calling a Nissan dealer in a neighboring larger city, since my dealer is the only game in town (~10K people).

Thanks.
