Fog Lights

Has anyone atempted to or completed changing their for lights on 04 Max. I atempted but couldn't figure out and when I looked in the manual it says to take to the dealer. I'm not about to do that for a what's usually simple bulb change. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I already have the bulbs.

For the driver's side, you need to free up some space by removing the intake or the stock air filter. After that is removed, you should have enough space to get to the bulb. It's a tight squeeze and very difficult to work in there, but with a little patience you should be able to do it. There may be a ground cable that gets in the way you can just remove it with a 10mm socket. For the passenger side, first remove the plastic finisher that covers all the fluid reservoirs. The clips come off pretty easily. Pop up the middle with a flathead screwdriver and the clips can be removed. Then you need to remove the the reservoir for the coolant. Two 10mm bolts keep it in place. You don't need to remove it completely, just pull it off to the side so you can work. Be careful you don't tip it the wrong way or it'll leak. After the reservoir is removed, you may want to remove the front metal bracket that holds the reservoir in place. If I remember correctly, it's another 10mm bolt. Just like on the driver's side, the ground cable may get in the way again, so you can remove it with a 10mm socket. If you still need more space, you can remove the fuse assembly. If I remember correctly, an 8mm socket should remove it. Take it step by step, it's not too hard to figure out. With the limited space, it's hard to work in there, but the other option is to remove the front bumper cover. Hope this helps.

just changed mine this Sat. thanks to Edify's help. Changed them to crystal ions and are great. what a difference. The passenger is a real pain. very tight and hard to see. good to have another hand hold out the way (I helped a friend help me). I also did the other exteriors to extreme white.

what bulbs/color are you doing? I have PIAAs. Very worth it.

I have changed my Fog bulbs too! Driver's side is easy. Passenger side is more difficult. It is NOT necessary to remove the washer fluid reservoir. Just remove the filler neck by twisting 1/8 turn and pulling upwards. There is an "O" ring sealing at the bottom, so it needs a good upwards pull to free it. Pulling out the old bulb is easy, but quite tricky relocating the new bulb and clip due to no visibility of the bulb socket. I use a small telescoping inspection mirror (available at most autoparts stores) and flashlight to see into that area and to make sure the new bulb is located with aligned notches, and then to hook up the bulb retaining spring.

Changed mine to Hella yellow bulbs. Looks Very nice. Did the drive side in roughly 10 minutes, then we went over to the passanger side and well...... 1 hour later i got it in and secure but when i turned them on. that one was aiming at the ground. alot lower then the other one. so back i go. found out it wasnt seated flat in there. so another hour goes by and it ended up looking great.

definitly looks alot better with a yellow colored fog bulb with the HIDs

You know that is covered under 3 years/36k warranty right? Don't let them tell you otherwise. My dealer said all bulbs are covered. Free bulb and labor. Save the others for down the road.

Yes...would love to see some pics. I used to have Sylvania Silverstar's on my BMW. I really liked those bulbs. They were not blue, had a real nice white look to them. Looked great with my projectors.

Is it me though, or because of the last gen Max HID theft issue now make it WAY too much of a pain to change out a damn bulb???? Also, on removing the entire headlight assembly, why does it seem from the ones being sold on Ebay, alot of them have broken tabs. Seems like if you remove the headlight assembly, I know not required for changing the bulbs, but the tabs look like they can be broken very easy.

I am thinking about just getting rid of the engine beauty covers later on just to make it easy to work on. Newer cars now just have so much plastic on the engine now to remove just to make it more difficult to get to a simple thing like a bulb or a spark plug. Hell, just changing a spark plug or bulb should take under a minute. Now though with all the plastic we have under the hood....takes quite a while. I feel like I have a body kit installed under the hood the dealer can charge more for labor just for something simple, and if you break a tab or plastic rivet....dealer only item to replace. Sorry, just venting.

Big improvement in the white color. Look good Edify11. How is the brightness over stock though? Did you consider the silver turn signal bulbs over the stock ones? What were the part numbers for the fog light and head light beams you went with and again, how does the illumination seem compared to the stock bulbs? Thanks for the pic for all of us to see.

Shouldn't your turn signals be orange? Or is that just the camera not getting the colours right?

I replaced the stock fogs with PIAA Super Plasma H3s. It gives off pretty much the same "white" as the stock HIDs. As for the turn signal, I replaced the bulb with PIAA Ectreme White 1157s. This is a dual function bulb, so when it blinks it gives off the same white as the HIDs. Normally, it's still white but not as bright. In addition, I changed all the interior lamps (dome, and feet) with PIAA extreme whites. This is actually my favorite. It makes a considerable difference having white lights inside. The dome lamps front and back is T6 and the lamps for the driver and passenger feet are 168.
