replacing outside mirror?

Since the search is basically disabled, I haven't been able to find a thread related to this...

I need to replace my driver's side mirror, but not the whole thing... the mirror and housing themselves are intact, but the black plastic piece that "links" the mirror to the car door itself is broken. I called the dealer but they're saying you have to buy the whole thing, plus pay them $84/hour for labor to install it. I'm thinking, "this cannot possibly be this difficult... especially for that rate!"

Does anybody know a) if I can buy *just* that part (I'll take a picture tomorrow if somebody needs a pointer and b) how difficult it would be to replace it myself? I already checked and the mirror itself is held onto the piece by 3 torx screws (already got that covered), so the only question would be if I need to remove the door panel to take that piece off from the inside or something.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Newb...most of the 6th gen cars are new enough that we're all still under warranty and not doing this sort of maintainance on our own vehicles yet.

Have some patience and perhaps someone will post a diagram from the service manual. Or..a link to the site where you can buy one yourself and then you can provide us all with info.

Lucky for me all this stuff is available already. Someone here forked over some nice PDFs of the door panel replacement and mirror assembly replacement.

I'm still fiddling with my mirror business... I talked to the dealer and they want $212 for the whole assembly, as they don't sell the plastic part by itself. On top of that, they want $85/hour for labor to paint the mirror... the one I don't need because it's intact...

Anybody know where I can find a mirror assembly online for an '04 Max? I don't need the color to match or the glass -- like I said, the whole thing is fine other than the black plastic piece.

I guess if nobody has any suggestions I'll bite the bullet and pay $300 for it (out of pocket, since that's less than my deductible anyway).

TIA anyway...

-- edit --

BTW, this is the part that I'm talking about:

I've looked for it in a couple of different places, including junkyards, but so far no luck.
