My 6th Gen has the shimmy but only on certain roads. I did have 4 tires replaced, struts, etc like most people here. Last week the weather was warm in NJ and I was on the Garden State Pkwy. at about 65 I could feel the shimmy. When I turn on a curved part of the pkwy the shimmy stops. As I kept going along, eventually the shimmy stopped. Same results with windows open and the sunroof open. Not sure if it was the outside temperature affecting the tires and the type of road, but I certainly think the shimmy appears on certain roads. I will take the same trip on the same road again and be attentive to the shimmy.

Dealer ordering new tires - Update 4
Just got back back from the dealer this morning from an 8:00am test drive with the Service Director since my Shimmy issue has not yet been resolved after them swapping out tires from a car that came back from auction... (who knew!)
Anyhow.... i only drove less than a mile down the street and there it was.. THE SHIMMY! I told him to check out the steering wheel, which he gripped and couldn't feel it. I guess anyone at the dealers couldn't feel the shimmy because they were gripping the steering wheel and not letting their hand rest on the top of it and letting the vehicle "coast" down from speed.
Soooo... he said "yep... i feel it... its the tires". So the Director said they discussed this with Nissan and decided to order me NEW tires, not off an auction car! I "requested" that they don't purchase the Goodyear Eagle RSA's and go with the Continental ContiExtremeContact, Pirelli PZero Nero M&S, or some other all season. He said he was actually thinking the Conti's... so they'll be in next week and we'll see what happens!!!
more to follow......

New Update!
Awhile has gone by since my last update when i was waiting on new tires. Well here it is!
The dealer got the tires in, only took 2 weeks, but I've been patient up to this point.
They ended up getting ContiTOURING and not ContiEXTREMEContact, but i wasn't going to complain because i just wanted the d@mn car "fixed". Well put a little over 250 miles on the new tires and SURPRISE! the SHIMMY at the usuall 55 - ~75 MPH. Called the Director at the dealer and he thought maybe a weight came off (odd how even on the other 2 pair of used tires and two sets of used rims that didn't seem to be a thought before not to mention over 3 road force balances).
Anyhow, took the car back and picked it up 3 hours later and he tells me a weight came off and they took it up to 90mph on the Interstate here and felt nothing, plus a Tech drove it as well. Basically told him we'll see after i drive it awhile and hopefully he'll only be hearing from me for oil changes and whatnot.
Well.... driving around town, STILL there! starts @ 55mph, nothing surprising there of course.
I haven't called him back yet, but I'm at a point now which direction to take this? I haven't updated Nissan Customer Service since my last update on here, which i will and inform the regional manager.
Should i pursue another dealership? Call BBB? Call the regional? All three? Tough call because there's no perfect answer i spose and if i pursue getting it purchased back they're going to try to deduct usage, so basically it would turn out to be one damn expensive rental car, i'm out of a vehicle, and now liable for the difference between the buyback
I LOVE the car, just not the shimmy! I'm amazed at how the direction this has been going is at tires, weights, and balancing, nothing more, nothing less....
Any thoughts or ideas.. fire away!

Has the steering rack been adjusted?

as NismoMax suggested (i believe), let them figure out what the issue is, but it's come to a point that they ONLY seem to focus on the rims and tires. Me suggesting this and that may only complicate matters.
Kind of a catch 22 really. When i did suggest they TSB numerous times, it really didn't seem to matter, or so it sounded. Tires and Rims would seem to be the most cost effective and less time consuming so i'm gathering this is why there's only focus on that part of this issue.

When dealing with my DTS, we came to the conclusion that the rack needed to be adjusted and RFV checked on the FIRST visit before doing anything else. If you want the car fixed you need to not take it back to the dealer anymore until CA gets a DTS to look at it. Obviously, your dealership is not contacting the technical hotline and you are not in a position to make them. Get as mad as you want at CA, but NEVER mention the BBB or lemon law unless you are 100% sure that is a road you want to go down. Once you bring that up, you are on your own. Make sure to be nice to your DTS, they are the most knowledgeable people that will ever work on your car and have much more room to work toward "making it right".
If your car does not have the butt shakes, having low RFV tires properly balanced and the steering rack adjustment will take care of your problem. Let consumer affairs get someone on the case that knows what they are doing. I know that this thread is talked about in the inner circles of higher level Nissan technical people, so don't be surprised if once you get a DTS on site, he already knows your story. I have got 3-4k miles on my car since it was last worked on and, knock on wood, it seems to still be pretty good. A bit of a shimmy, but by no means is it something that is worthy of risking the improvement in ride quality over by trying to fix it. I now feel like I am back to the "platform" shimmy issue that has to do with enigineering rather than a fixable problem.

Following up with CA
As stated before, no, my Steering has not been adjusted. Based on much wasted time and your suggestion Nash, I've contacted CA (once again) and am requested the Regional Rep Call me before i call the dealership any longer. I'm going to mention the TSB and Steering Rack, but ultimately let HER guide the direction for resolution as the dealer has ONLY, as you've read above, focused on Tires/Rims/and Weights, non of which replacing, swapping, "re-doing" has fixed.
Any updates from anyone else?
Rambling (venting) off topic.... Wish it just as simple as people with their scratched IPOD Nano faces getting too many scratches and Apple atleast acknowledging a problem and doing a recall...
Once again... more to follow...

FINALLY! Another dealer is working on my issue!
It's been awhile since my last update, so... I took my car to another local Nissan Dealer (probably should have done this LONG before my 6th visit at the other), but anyway, i took the tech with me for a drive on the way back to my house to see if HE could SEE the shimmy @ the magical number of 55+ mpg or better yet, feel it when he drove back.
And of course, the car hardly shimmed at all on the way home, BUT, just enough for him to see the shaking back on and forth on the cross grips on the steering wheel.
I told him about the Nissan TSB 04085, which i showed the original dealer WAY back when i first bought the car, but they never performed the steering rack adjustment as recommended, where he wrote the number down.
So they called me back after 3 hours and said they put the car up on the rack with someone inside "driving" it in 2nd gear, and standing under it, they could see the tires going back and forth and are going to perform the steering rack adjustment.... FINALLY! So my car is staying there over night... oh well..... hopefully it fixes my issue.
Will see what happens from here and keep you updated.
Nashmax.... i appreciate your firm suggestions on the steering rack issue as well....![Smilie](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Hi folks,
Recent buyer of a used '04 Maxima so I'm gradually immersing myself in the forums with all the information here. I've skimmed quickly through this thread, and it looks like shimmying has been an issue from day one.
My Max has 41,000 miles on it... I don't know much history of the car, but it does have new tires. There is a slight vibration (almost not noticeable) at certain speeds and I do know for a fact that at least the front driver's side rotor has suffered some warpage... it will be getting replaced in the near future. The pads look pretty new, in fact, too new to tell if there's any abnormal wear yet.
When I first test drove the car, mechanically it ran great... two things I immediately noticed was that when driving the car straight, the top of the steering wheel was resting at 1 o'clock. Normally that would indicate a severe alignment issue, but there was no bad shaking or vibration associated with that, and I insisted to the dealer (which was a Nissan dealer) that the issue be corrected. I've read various posts in regards to replacements and adjustments members have had done with the steering racks on their cars, so I don't know if this was a result of a problem or a repair; I probably won't be able to find out from the dealer. The "shimmy" I experience is very faint... not as severe as some other members have experienced on here, but just barely enough to let me know it's there. It's pretty consistent and does not deteriorate with speed (been up to as fast as 95mph without any major problem).
Has anyone solved the problem with rotor replacement? This car has new tires, a very recent alignment, but as I've said, is in definite need of at least new front rotors (or at least having them turned). I get what sounds like a rubbing rotor sound when making left turns, but I've taken every thing apart of the front left wheel and I don't see anything wearing abnormally. I suspect this rotor problem also might be triggering a fault in the ABS system, because the ABS light does come on while driving the car.

I'm grateful though this other dealership i'm working with actually performed the TSB and not just do RFB's, tire rotations, and rim/tire swaps. So now that it's has been done and the shimmy is still there, i guess the only option is to move forward with this dealer and see what they come up with, as i have 6000 miles left for the 3/36.

I HAD the shimmy and the dealer said he fixed it. I had the rotors turned, I had new tires, I had the TSB and everything else you can name. I finally took the car to a local tire/rim dealer and he knew what my problem was after talking for 5 min. I needed Hub centric rings. A 10 dollar purchase fixed everything !!!!

Would you be kind enough to explain what a Hub centric ring is? Thanks.

I'll bring this up to the tech when i take it in which should be sometime this week. I wonder if "suggest" them putting this on would cause issues with my pursuance on warranty as i'm still within it. BUT i do recall NismoMax stating that a dealer CAN'T refuse you warranty service unless that part/modification is PROVEN to cause problems.... hmmmmmm
With the part being so cheap, i might as well, it may end up saving my 7+ trips to the dealer like i did the first time around with the other dealership.
Lobe, here's a good picture of how and where they go:

I took delivery of my '06 Max SL April 28, 2006. Shimmy right from the getgo. I have had it at the dealer 5 times in 2 weeks. They have road force balanced twice, aligned twice, swapped out tires with another stock vehicle (new of course), adjusted the steering rack "slide force" twice. Shimmy is worse than ever. I am pursuing "Lemon Law" to try to get a buy back.
This is utterly ridiculous on a brand new $32,000 vehicle

Anybody who has persistent shimmy, please file your complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (have your VIN ready)
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/complain/
It only takes 5 minutes; if many of use report, then the problem cannot longer be ignored and this might bring hope to those who no longer can apply the lemon law.
The information on the NHTSA might also be usefull to organize a class action.
Thanks

I'll definitely go and post my complaint, something i should have done a loooong time ago. However, as far as the date goes of those complaints and them being filed so long ago, nothing has yet to come of it. Granted I'm not exactly sure how the NHTSA pursues manufacturers with these types of complaints, whether or not they base on how many filed and/or whether or not there were injuries involved.
At some point though i'd imagine a class-action will have to be filed to have anything done about it.

If I understand the NHTSA site's policy correctly, you can request for an investigation: all one person has to do is search the data and select all the shimmy complaints, and then submit a request for investigation.
So, lets get all of our complaints on the NHTSA site - come on folks, lets kick some butt here

After looking at their website (NHTSA), it looks like you have to call in and request it and it's more less for safety issues. I'm not sure they're going to investigate something with much diligence such as this, especially if there are a handful of investigation requests (from us), Nissan will just say it's a "sensitive suspension", and that there have been no accidents.
From the NHTSA's website:
"Call the Vehicle Safety Hotline toll free at 1-888-327-4236 to report safety defects or to obtain information on cars, trucks, child seats, highway or traffic safety. "
Trust me.. i want to get this resolved as quickly as you (or all those experiencing this), but it's gonna have to come down to a lawyer to represent a group of people and to push the issue on the peoples behalf. I'll still file my complaint though![Smilie](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Anyone know a lawyer to inquire about this?

Shimmy disappearing?
Well. One month into ownership (1,500 miles) after 2 road force balances, 2 alignments and a steering rack adjustment, the shimmy has diminished by 80-90%. What could this be attributed to? Rotors breaking in? (might have had excess metal from the factory), outside temps into the 80's now and tire sidewalls loosening up?, rack adjustment taking a few hundred miles to adjust to other settings? I'm baffled. I have an appt. tomorrow with the Area Service Manager and I'm afraid he won't feel the shimmy during the road test.
Any ideas? (6 service visits later for same problem since new)
thanks
