KEY PRogramming

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's something you need to get done at the dealer. I doubt they're made to be programmed by an end user, since that would allow you to make ones that could open *other* cars
And, unfortunately, I've heard it's not cheap to have done.... I believe I heard someone say it cost them like 50 bucks to get a new key fob programmed.

I think he is asking about the NVIS (or whatever it is called now) and the key itself, not the fob. I had a set of keys stolen a while back and the dealer quoted me $74 per key to cut and program. They claimed that the process took too long, therefore the high price. I don't buy it, but what else are you gonna' do if you don't want to do away with the security features?

You cannot just program an extra key.
When an extra key is cut, the car must be reprogrammed using the Consult II- dealer only. This is used to retrieve the passcode built into the car that allows this procedure.
The car is being programmed to recognize the keys, not the other way around. Similar to programming a new remote. All keys must be present to complete the process.

for any nissan you cannot program the key your self unless you have that mini little computer. Its like one of those things gas and power companies use to put the meter readings in.
If you need to program an extra remote that is easy to do.
Also dealers will rape you on the extra key. But nothing really you can do. Key itself is expensive, programming it is a piece of cake with that comp.

My last car was a Ford. I could program extra keys for the system as long as I had two that were currently programed properly. There was a long process of turning the key from off to accessory 5 times. Putting in the next one, doing the same. Then putting in the new one to be programmed. I forget the exact details. But it could be done without going to the dealer.

I just ordered an extra (programmed) key the other week from my dealer because my new alarm required it... I had to bring in all existing keys plus leave the car w/ them in order for them to do it. Crazy huh?!! Took them about an hour. Grand total = $115. Extra keys aren't cheap anymore!!! Sucks!

I remember a post in the Fifth Generation forum (back when I had a 2000 GLE), about removing the transmitter (RF?) from an existing key and placing it close enough to the receiver so that simple keys cut at Wal-Mart could start the car. However, this invalidated the security function of the keys.
Does anyone know if this still works? BTW, I am not volunteering
