What is the trick to getting it off? If 2 air guns and 2 men weighing close to 500lbs could not budge it what are we doing wrong? Does Nissan use locktite on the bolt?

I installed mine a week ago and notice the enginer power seems to be more evenly spread out within the gears. Also, it seems to spool nicer with more gusto in all the gears especially my favorite: 3rd into 4th. (auto 5 spd.) I have an AEM CAI and I changed my piping back from the CAT straight through to the exhauts. Removing the resonator. What a difference.

I do have a question to other UDP owners: I seem to be getting a chirpping sound coming from where the belts are. Like cherp, cherp, cherp, cherp, etc. is this normal?

No chirpping sounds here. Check your belt alignment. Maybe change your belts.

Check the tightness of the belts, I like them German specs-gutten tight!

They changed the accessory belt and made some adjustments. I suspect he tightened too much. Now she's good and purring again!

Any PROBLEMS?

OK, I've had a UDP from Unorthdox sitting in my garage for a year now. I tried to install it about 10 months ago but that bolt would not come off (and I used an impact wrench...not a particularly healthy one, but still).

Anyway, I'm taking it in to a local shop to get it done on Wednesday, but before I do I would like to hear if anyone had any problems caused by installing an Unorthodox UDP.

For instance, living in TX I REALLY worry about the AC, but I have heard others say that doesn't seem to be an issue. Then I read about a possible oil leak problem, but others say that simply doesn't happen. Still others have mentioned potential engine vibration (which I find hard to believe given the way this engine is balanced but...) and others resport engine noises.

So, if it is installed correctly is there any thing I really should worry about?

Also, is there a seal that needs to be replaced when this thing is installed or not? Have read it both ways.

Thanks!

Thats funny cuz, I have had my UDP for a YEAR now cuz I cant get that damn bolt off. There is no way to hold the crank unfortunately so the pulley spins when I try to break it loose. I too have an impact gun, but my compressor is not up to the task.

Chern: Hopw do u hold the engine so it doesnt turn. I have a breaker bar but engine turns. I had someone step on brkaes while in gear and I can turn the engine. I tried to jam a wrench in the crank holes but I snapped the wrench.

I used the biggest screwdriver I had and slid it through one of the pulley holes and turned the pulley slowly till I found a corner to pinch in under. With one hand I held it from spinning while I used the breaker bar to loosen the nut. It pretty much took all the strenght I had, but after 3 attempts, the b!tch broke loose. If you have 2 people, easier...

DOH!!!!!!

Well, earlier (in this thread I believe) there was a diagram that clearly showed it was counter-clockwise to loosen, so that is what I was doing!

If it is truly clockwise to loosen, then there is no wonder I couldn't get the thing off. I had a breaker bar, the brakes jammed with a board against the pedal, and I weigh in at 225 and I PULLED on that thing as hard as I could and then used the impact wrench and it wouldn't budge..but I was going counter (normal) clockwise to loosen. OH THE AGONY!

Do you recall with near 100% certainty that it was clockwise (reverse thread) to loosen? Again, there was a diagram somewhere on this site (this thread I thought) that showed counter (normal) clockwise to loosen.

THANKS!

Edit. But It may be harder to control the wrench...

Should work OK, the first break is the hardest, everything after that is fairly easy...

I did mine myself and know for a fact that it is the traditional way to loosen the crank bolt, you must pull/push toward the front of the car. Learn from my mistakes and when placing a screwdriver into the crank pulley to hold it be very careful that it does not dig in, the timing cover is alum and I put a small hole in mine and had to JB weld it.

I had to get the GATES, Part # K060405 for the ALTERNATOR & A/C BELT. I intially bought the GATES, Part# K060408, but my machanic said that it was too long and recommended that I go even smaller. Two weeks later and no sweaks or any other type of problems.

Is there a way to get a source which ABSOLUTELY shows the proper direction to loosen since we have two opposite opinions??

Referring to the factory service manual I found online I found no reference to the pulley bolt being reverse thread.

In fact there is a arrow indicating standard direction when you tighten it and it states tightening is a two step process.
1) 39-49 Nm / 29-36 ft lb
2) 60-65 degrees clockwise

It appears there is a tool a "pulley holder" to help with this disassembly. It appears to be a large box wrench.

This should put an end to any question? Well maybe.

Take it easy!

Looks pretty straight forward

Note it is not listed in the special service tools section.

Actually it appears you remove the starter and insert a special ring gear locking plate.

Enjoy

The crank rotates clockwise. I think the rule of thumb is you loosen in direction that crank travels? I cant remember!!!

I just did this 3 weeks ago and without a shadow of a doubt it is left loosen, right tight. I had a J hook on a chain attatched to a tow strap and attached to my friends Excursion to hold the pulley in place, placed myself in front of the car and using a breaker bar and a 19mm socket/ratchet pulled toward me and after 3 good pulls it came loose. Do not push/pull toward the back of the car or you will tighten it!!!!
