The VQ35 Motor
At first Nissan claimed that the most hp that they were able to get out of this motor is 287 normally aspirated but now i'm seeing that the 2005 Infiniti G35 has 298hp out of this same damn engine. I'm starting to feel really short changed on this issue. How much hp can this engine really put out is my question and someone needs to find out the exact air/fuel mixture and ecm settings that they are using on the higher hp cars such as the 350 and G35. I hope everybody else feels the same way as me. I spent 35K on this car and all I got is 265. Where are the rest of my ponies?

Check out the torque figures, too ... you'll see they sacrificed a little torque to get the hp number up, and torque is more important to performance than hp in most cases. Most of the people on the G forums figure the performance difference between the '04 engine and the new one will be negligible.
This is a juggling act. With a given displacement, there's only so much hp and torque you can get without introducing new technology like variable-length intake or variable lift valves, etc.). You can increase one of the numbers, but the other one has to go down. The Acura TL is a good example - its 3.2 liter engine is rated at 270hp, but it has measley torque (238 ft-lbs), so the Maxima's 3.5 liter engine pulls stronger in spite of being down 5hp. (Don't start quoting 0-60 or quarter mile times ... that has to do with gearing and weight.)
Point is, Infiniti needed to distance itself from Nissan and Acura (TL at 270hp and the new RL rated at 300hp), so it juggled some numbers.
