TipTronic shift speeds & RPM

I've purused this site for an answer to this and could not find one.

I have an 05. 300 miles. I absolutely love it! Except for one thing. I definitely don't like the TipTronic forcing me to abide by its shifting regulations. Winters here can be annoying, with several events of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

I *HATE* TCS, and throwing all that torque at the wheels, with or without TCS engaged, seems that it will be fruitless at times.

Additionally, while using TipTronic AND automatic mode, i am sort of disappointed about the upper shift speeds. First shifts to second no lower than 15. Third shifts to fourth no lower than 35. And fourth shifts into fifth no lower than 45, all regardless it seems of actual RPM.

There are times i like to step on the gas, to use the power available. But there are many other times i rather have the smoothness of a clean shift at a low RPM, to an even lower RPM.

Is there a way to chip the AT to allow me to start from dead in 2nd or 3rd? Can i also get rid of completely, or at least somewhat unrestrict, the shifting restrictions placed on me by my automatic transmision? My Sebring with AutoStick allows it, any standard tranny allows it, but not the Maxi.

yep. the semi-auto shift is virtually useless. it will either automatically upshift you or downshift depending on vehicle speed.

The engine computer is programmed to shift at lower RPM until the engine is broken in.
After that, TipTronic will hold a gear until redline is reached or until a manual shift is performed. Stepping fully on the gas from standstill in TipTronic mode will give you awesome acceleration with shifts occuring at redline RPM.
Wait until after break-in and you will see what I mean.
My Tiptronic is GREAT for holding a gear in tight traffic conditions when immediate full power/RPM's are needed.
Don't abuse the engine until it is broken in - Nissan set the initial shift points to help prevent you from doing this.

zach, you should not be concerned about this yet since you shouldn't be going over 4k rpm yet. once you break her in, tiptronic is great. even in auto, it has hit redline before shifting in the low gears. only regulations are those you need: will upshift just before redline (preventing engine damage) and will downshift close to 1k rpm (preventing stalling).

once you get passed 1200 miles and play with it a bit, you should be impressed with the feedback.

p.s. check the NorthEast forum closer to spring for the next Philly/King of Prussia meet.

Thank you for your response. I wasn't aware that the ECU or other computer eased off on the restrictions once the engine had been broken in. In all honesty, i HAVE had her at 5500 rpm twice. Having all that torque at my disposal and NOT using it is absolutely killing me! I presume others might have also, since there were 28 miles on the car when i bought it, so probably 3 or 4 test drives before me.

The real funny thing is... i didn't wake up the day i bought it thinking "im going to buy a maxima today." In fact, i hadnt considered buying another car for at least a year. I have a 01 Sebring Convertible (crap, although its fun to drive) that i really like, its just not a winter car.

So, on my way home from a meeting i went by Lancaster Nissan and asked to test drive the Maxima. I had my eye on the Maxima since they debuted the 6th gen last year and i had been talking about test driving one for a while.

Well, as soon as i took her out, and when i got behind the wheel and wound her up a bit on route 283, i knew i was driving it home that day. What an impulse buy! Now my Sebring is getting jealous because I haven't touched it since i brought the Maxima home!

I'm happy to have found this forum. I've never been so bonkers over a car before. It is the sexiest car I've ever seen. I'll take it over a Ferarri anyday! Now, my only problem is that i will need to know my cruise control very well. 40, 50, 60 feels SOOOO slow in this car. I KNOW im going to get in some trouble...

The specs, in case anyone were wondering:

2005 Maxima SE. Onyx. Black leather. 5-speed Auto. Driver Preferred Package. Senory Package. Premium Audio Package. Power sunroof. TCS. (boo). No NAV (I can live without it, but it woulda been nice).

All stock, no changes yet. None planned. I can take pics once we get a good enough day for it here in PA (maybe April?) but I'm sure yall have seen an Onyx 6th gen before.
