Weird Noise when First Turning the Steering Wheel After Starting

Hey, recently I've been hearing a weird noise when I turn the steering wheel after I first start the car. Its rubber sounding, not metal. Well, here's what happens step by step:

1. Get into the car
2. Start the car
3. Put the car in reverse
4. Reverse out of the driveway, turning the steering wheel clock-wise
5. Stop then put the car in drive
6. Turn the wheel counterclockwise while driving off <--- this is where I hear the noise.

I only hear it once and it always happens after I get in the car, start it and drive off. And it only happens when its in drive and when I'm turning the wheel at first startup. The sound is coming from the front drivers side. I don't hear it at all after that when I'm driving around town, making turns and stuff. It happens even when I don't reverse out - just put it in drive and drive off (when first starting the car).

Really weird. Is it because I'm turning the wheel while I just drive off from a stop? (something to do with that engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering?) I'm pulling off slowly while turning the wheel.

Its just annoying whenever I get in the car and drive off. Never happens when I'm driving around town. I hope its nothing bad.

Wait a minute, dont you have to turn counter clockwise to go forward in Step 6. Per your description, you will make a circle.....

You're right. I meant to say counterclockwise.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue. I thought it was only me. And 92maxima, I have 2100mi on mine.

I don't think its the tires because once I'm driving and making all sorts of turns at different speeds, I don't hear the sound.

Nah, the car is increasing speed as I turn the wheel. But, I'm starting off from a stop.

I'm thinking its that speed sensitive power steering pumping to maximum since I'm moving from a stop - its adjusting from a neutral state to full power or something. Anyone have more input?

Have the same problem. Think it has to do with the power steering.

Try doing this in an open parking lot.

Turn the wheel full lock to one side and do a few loops.
Now turn the wheel the other way to full lock to do some more loops in the other direction.

When I do this in my car I hear a cracking/rubbing sound from under the car. It happens approx when the wheel returns back to straight. Let me know if you guys experience this.

I have this problem also with my 2005 SE. I was told it was the front support tube bracket. So i went to the dealer to get it replaced. They replaced it for me though but nothing happened. I still get the "rattle" noise when i frist take off. It doesnt happen any other time when i put the car into park then drive. It only happens when i start the car then put it in drive and take off. Im starting to get used to it but Im going back to the dealer to see whats wrong with it. I really want to get it fixed. But as soon as i find out ill post and update.

OK, so now we are discussing two topics? or am I on crack...don't answer that in a post please.

Are we talking about a buzz rattle noise from under the car upon acceleration at 1800 and 2800 rpm? Mostly heard in 2nd gear and in the other gears if you really listen for it

I have this problem and there is a TSB out there for it stating that the support bracket for the catalyst/front tube support bracket.

So 05MaXiMaMenG are you saying you had this TSB done and it still makes that noise? Let us know...I really hate Nissan sometimes

I think its a different problem. I'll have to check my bracket when I change the oil in a few weeks.

The sound isn't metallic either which leads me to believe its a different problem.

Im not sure what the deal is, but it is kinda annoying, I noticed right after I got the car which was last week. It seems like i have had another car do this, but i cant remember which one. In the 6 years I have been driving I have had 13 cars. I belive it was a 2000 Grand Prix that did it... Not sure though

My '05 SL just tunred 1000 miles and I first noticed it when I had 850 miles on it. Mine does it at start up and when I make a left turn and after about a minute it stops doing it. It sounds like the power steering.
