I had this smell with my 05 SL intermittently during the first few thousands of miles too. It's my understanding it's from the sulfur in premium fuel. The odor would get in to the cabin when I had the window rolled up, so it must have been coming in through the cabin ventilation intake (I don't know where this is on the Max). I typically have the ventilation system set to draw in outside air, as opposed to recirculating the cabin air.

Hello all I am new to the forum. I joined to research this very issue. My 04 SE with 14k miles is still having this issue. I have tried all types of gas but have yet to find one that works better over the other.

If smells can get in, what stops the CO from comming in too?

If you're going where I think you're going, the answer to your question would seem to be...nothing. This is not a comforting thought.

I wonder why the smell has gone away. One wonders if there something in the catalytic converter that must be "seasoned" or saturated when the car is new after which the sulfur smell is no longer an issue.

That's where I'm going. If that smell is from the exhaust...
I've driven the car 31k miles with the A/C, windows and roof in every possible configuration and so far I haven't passed out. I'm not worried about that but it is weird.

The Smell Problem Is Fixed

It took a email to Nissan for someone to actually do something about it after a third check. Anyway if you read one of my previous posts, I complained about a fart smell getting into the car. So a specialist from Nissan came and he checked the engine. Follow me I am not that good with engines. The problem was that 3 out of the 6 fuel injectors were ruined. He said that the o-rings that seal the fuel injectors was broken so he changed all 6 and today I had no smell going to work. The gas was seeping out and getting into the climate control somehow. Smelt like ***. The car also seems more smother and stronger. I hope it works. Excuse me if something is wrong here I didn't really get his hand drawn diagram, I wasn't sure if the o-rings around the spark plugs were ruined or if there is a such thing as 6 feul injectors.

I did when it still had the break in miles 1500 or so, but it went away..... I thought that was a sulfur smell that burns off after awhile, common on new cars....

You want the Nissan e-mail adress? Or do you want the e-mail I sent? Because it got deleted since it took them so long to respond.

This is the link to contact them http://www.nissanusa.com/form/1,3402...tactus,00.html

Sorry to hear this is an almost common problem.

On the plus side, this gives me an excuse now when my wife is in the car and I sneak one out....

Weds night I had some terrible gas in the Max. Nothing says "I love you" to your women like hitting the WINDOW LOCK!!!

How much does a divorce cost these days?????

Same problem here...2005 SE bought in April.
I say is more like a sewer smell. I drove the car yesterday without using the A/C and no smell. I'll take the car out now and see if the smell occurs when i step hard on the gas. If still no smell today, i'll use the A/C tomorrow to see if the smell comes back. Very annoying...

No that is a different smell. That is the smell you get when you first turn on your A/C for the first time in the year. Our smell is different. I think I am gonna have to change the air filter though. Because I get a very, very, slight, slight smell. Dont even have to open the windows no more. Just enough to remind you of the hell before it was fixed. Before it would be snowing and I had to open the windows since I had to rev the engine sometimes to get out of the snow. Now you smell like the remidance. Maybe still stuck in the system.

This was precisely my experience too. When the car was very new, the smell was nearly unbearable at times, but it seems to have gone the way of the DoDo bird after the first couple of thousand miles or so.

I'm sorry to say guys but, it's back again. Every day it got stronger and stronger. The car feels weaker and louder again, it could be a defect on the fuel injectors. Maybe they will have a TSB soon. Nissan just called me an hour ago and I told them. I never knew they called to check up on the car. I guess since I sent the e-mail to Nissan, they trying to be nice.

Thanks for the update! If I may ask, what's the mileage on your car?

If you're running through "O" rings like candy, then something about where the "O" rings seat might be amiss. Perhaps there are some metal to metal fit tolerances that are contributing the premature "O" ring failure. This can't be good. Please keep us updated. Thanks.

ummm, based on what im understanding from the posts, that fart smell would be a catalytic converter. i understand that the replacement of injectors and sela fixed it but are you sure that is what is causing it for sure?

I had the same problem as well...took it in to the dealer and after he inspected it, the tech asked me if I could f@rt in his face. I complied, and was astonished when he told me it was the same EXACT smell the car was making. Its those perforations inthe leather that hold the stink, and he suggested I used a seat cover and tey the waft & crack a window technique. 36,000 miles now, problem has not come back! knock on wood.

At first I thought it was me and I didn't notice that I farted. But then I realized it's always happens when I go up a hill and stop at the red light. It can't be the area that smells because it doesn't smell going up the same hill in my 4th Gen. Also it can't be the area because it's the richest place on the island. Todt Hill ****ers. O yea, for whoever cares, I never had time to get around to making an appointment for another checkup. Forth time I may add, for the same problem.

It seems like a pretty common problem, the sulphur stink whenever you punch the gas hard. I have 12,000 miles on my 04 and the problem just will not go away. The Dealer keeps blaming it on the fuel I use, yet even with fueling at different problems the problem exists. it stinks!!!!!!!!!!111

Also, my driver's door handle [exterior] sticks all the time and lubing it does nothing [That's what my Dealer keeps doing to fix it??????] Nothing worse than having a door open warning at 90MPH!!!!

Anyone else have this problem?

I have had a door handle problem similar to what you describe above, but mine is on the passenger from side. Occasionally, when the handle is pulled out to open the door, it sticks open and then when the door is closed it won't shut/latch because the linkage from the exterior door handle to the latching mechanism at the end of the door holds the latch so that it won't grab the metal piece on the car body to close. When I jiggle the exterior handle, the mechanism frees itself and functions/latches properly.

I haven't tried lubricating it yet. What did you use? I might try some WD-40 or 3-in-1 oil. Other suggestions?

Yeah, that's another problem I can add to my list of crap with the Maxima. The door handle sticks on occasion. Of course, the dealerships always give the same results: "could not duplicate problem."
Things like this make me not want to buy a Nissan again. I will give my honest opinion to someone if they ask me how I like my maxima.

I've had that smell too, but my dealer tells me they can't find anything wrong. I've tried probably 5 different brands of gas, but no change.
