I am not a pro at this but I think that you should not be dropping from 2nd to 1st at 35 mph. Just my thought.

i would agree..i have a se with the sport shift also...look at your RPMs when ur in second doing 35mph...anything i believe anything above 3k rpms will do that to ya...try down shifting at a lower rpm to avoid that..i also dont think doing that is good for ur engine and tranny..i've done the same thing u've done before...just left off the gas and let the rpms drop..try it out...u can downshift pretty easy when ur in 5th for example..just keep an eye on ur rpms always

, you should never downshift to first..... I usually downshift to 4th or 3rd never below that.. I let the computer downshift by itself if it has to at that speed..

but, never downshift to first while rolling at that speed like that...

When was your SE built? Is it a 2004? I'm asking because there is a TSB out for harsh-shifting on early 2004's (I had it applied to mine, and it's like 98% better).

EDIT: If it only does this for shifts into 1st, then this probably isn't the problem... I'd recommend not doing that either (I've also down shifted into 1st at low speeds and even going like 5MPh, there is a small lurch - I'd just let the computer hanle it).

its not a small lurch.. its like hitting a pothole going 45mph and the rim hitting the side of the pothole.. its that kinda feeling.. even while goin slow... never happend before.. ..SE built 07/03

The reason you heard a thud is because you dont downshift to first gear ever. Let the computer do it. If you driving a 6spd of your car and you downshifted into first at too fast of a speed you will clunk into first jumping all over the road like you had hydros in you ride.

I thought my tranny computer would let me downshift or upshift into a gear at a speed it didn't think was safe.. (i.e. it is idiot-proof).

Whoops - that should have said "wouldn't" let me downshift or upshift into an unsafe gear.

I agree 100%....also, be advised that Nissan is new to this Manumatic shift thing. BMW had problems when they first started. Downshifting to 1st should be avoided. People will do what they want though. Remember the old saying.....If you want to play, you have to pay....the old timers know from experience what I am talking about.
