Airbag Safety System help?
Airbag Safety System help?
I have an 04 SL, the driver seat was the only thing that depoyed, I'm wondering do I just need to replace the seat and just the seat module? The dealer told me I would need to replace the entire airbag modules for the whole car which would cost an arm and a leg and a kidney...
Anyone know about the Nissan airbag system? I'm wondering if I just need the driver seat module and a reset of the airbag system..
Thanks in advance...

yeah, but I'm wondering if that's all I need is the seat and the seat module, one dealer told me I needed to replace ALL modules in the car! I thought that was crazy..that's why I'm asking if anyone here actually KNOWS...

The few people that have wrecked their new Max have insurance and don't worry about this. if emails/phone calls get you nowhere, hopefully RHMax cam find out.
Thanks, I'll call a few "stealers" tomorrow and see if I can get someone knoledgeable...I found a guy selling the complete seat for $400 all I needed was the module which list in the above price sheet for $181.00, so if I findout that's all I really need to reset the system I'll move in that direction and let you guys know..
Thanks
Thanks

Your steering wheel bag didnt go off? Was it a side wreck?

Curtain/Side Air Bag System
Since they're built into the front seats - not the door panels - Maxima's side-impact supplemental air bags move with you when you adjust the seat to help protect your head and chest areas in certain side impacts. And above you, roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags help protect front and rear passengers from injuries.

It basically ripped the stiches off the side of the seat and now it just needs to be restiched..
When looking here the next day, I realize I have confused two systems in this post, so I have deleted what I posted and replaced it with a more accurate one at 11 PM Thursday, June 23.

This is intended for rear end collisions, but may have deployed without your knowledge. If so, the entire associated assembly (on the floorboard under the driver's seat), along with the seat belts themselves, must be replaced.

I went for oil change today (my own mechanic, not dealer), and this is what I got on airbags. The airbag module, not the crash, determinds which bag(s) to deploy. This could effect seatbelt modules too. So try here: http://www.489parts.com . Dealers will only sell you complete set.
Soufsidah09 and luigi'smax,
In my previous post (since deleted), I confused two safety systems.
The Active Head Restrain System is actually a PASSIVE system. If an impact from the rear forces a person in either of the front seats backward into the seat, that force is directed against the bottom front of the two steel rods holding up the headrest.
That force backward against the bottom front of the rods causes the top of the rods to swing forward until the attached headrest contacts the back of the person's head. This reduces the distance the head travels backward, reducing the chance of whiplash, as well as reducing the chance of a cracked upper vertebra.
This is a PASSIVE system, in that there are no sensors and no electronics. After the headrests have activated in this manner, they automatically return to their original position, and require no restoring, repair, or any other action.
The system I should have been mentioning in my original post was the Seat Belt Pre-tensioner System. There is a duplicate system; one for each front seat. This system activates when a front seat belt is impacted rather forcefully by a person's body in a (usually frontal) collision.
Not all collisions activate this system, and one should have Nissan check for deployment after any firm collision. Deployment of the front air bags is by separate sensor, and not tied directly with the Seat Belt Pre-tensioner system. In any particular collision, one may come into play without the other.
The Seat Belt Pre-tensioner System is designed to instantly detect a serious impact, immediately bring the belts firm against the person in the seat, somewhat control the force the belt exerts against the body, as well as control the rate at which it is applied and allowed to ease when the pressure becomes very great.
In the event the Seat Belt Pre-tensioning System comes into play in a collision, the belt, buckle and retractor drum (on the floor under each the front seat) MUST all be replaced.
Sorry I confused these two systems. It has been over a year since I devoured the Owner's Manual, and it may be time to read it again.

How does the sensor know if you get in a side wreck? Does it wait till the car gets smashed into the chair? If so what if you punch the sensor on the chair really hard, like you sitting in the back. Would that make it deploy? Like for example my friend tells me drive me home I say no and he punchs the chair real hard would it deploy? I know I sound stupid but from reading some posts thats what it seems like.

Both driver and passenger belts retract fine and lock on fast pull of the belt
Looks like all I need is the side curtain, drivers seat, and sensors!
eLMo - No sensors are in the seats. The sensors are down near floor level, and are at several places around the car.
The main diagnosis sensor unit is underneath the console between the front seats. There are satellite sensors on the floor under the front seats near each front door. There is a crash zone sensor at the front end of the car.
Hitting or kicking the seats should not deploy any active restraint systems. But only a petulant child should ever be caught doing this to a Maxima.
SoufSidah09 - The Owner's Manual does not say if it is possible to tell visually whether the seat Belt Pretensioner System has been deployed by visual inspection.
But it may be possible to do so, as the manual states: 'If the vehicle becomes involved in a frontal collision but the pretensioner is not activated, (you should still) be sure to have the Pretensioner System checked out.' From that, it would seem that it is possible to know if the system deployed. If your belts are behaving normally, have a dealer you trust (oxymoron?) to tell you how to determine if this system has deployed. You may be OK here.
