*help* dealer can't find it!!!

hi,

my car was at the dealer whole day today, got the catalyst support bracket
replaced (rattling sound during light acceleration is gone), all brake rotors
resurfaced.

the thing is that they can't figure out what makes the knocking sound from
the back. they looked at it last week and today and still don't know what
causes it. they told me to bring it back on tues.

I get the knocking sound from the back when only one of the rear wheel goes
over a bump. anybody had this problem and got it fixed?

i hope it's not a bad shock. but, "one wheel going over a bump" the first thing checked should be the rear shocks.

i told them to check the rear shocks when i was there for second time. either shocks are ok or they're not listening to me...

thanks guys for your inputs.

Have you checked to see if you're spare tire is moving around?
I know it sounds dumb, but throwing out possibilities...

Strut

Sounds like either a rear strut is bad and isn't dampening well or the bolt at the top of the strut is banging against something. Both of which I've experienced in another vehicle. Good luck with Service though ... They're always fun.

Could be the infamous rear deck rattle too. As the frame flexes the brake light cover may bang against the glass. See the sticky or other threads in that regard. I did the sock fix, and later switched to a couple small clear rubber feets between the window and the 3rd brake light. Narry a rattle from the rear deck after that.

Things that go Thump in the back

I remember reading here about someone who had a thump in the back. They dropped the rear seats and had someone drive them around until they could locate the thump. It was some support member in the back under the rear shelf. As I recall they put a sheet metal screw into it to stop it from banging against the bottom of the shelf. I'm doing this from memory, so you may want to look back in the earlier threads or in the red listing at the top of the 2004-2005 list. Anyway the diagnostic procedure sounds like it would work. (have someone else drive while you're in the trunk, it's safer).

yep

You got it right on the money, it was my GF driving while i found the rattle. I used a self tapping screw to bolt the two sheet metal pieces together. Here is the link to the thread.

Good Luck Bro,

just dropped off my car at the dealer, they said it's gonna take some time to
find exact location of the sound with some kinda sensors they have. they
gave me a 01 sentra as a loaner....lol well better than nothing.

i hope they find what makes the knocking sound this time and get it fixed.

Could be the rear sway bar. I have heard that it has come loose on some cars.

maybe...but i heard it even before i installed stillen sway bar, I was hoping stillen sway bar could fix the problem. After installing the stillen sway bar,
it's still the same. i didn't have a torque wrench when i installed the rsb.
but i think i tightened it properly. the dealer hasn't called me yet.

i will keep you updated.

thanks guys.

I had the same knock in my sentra. It ended up being that the exhaust was off one of it's hanger. Typically it's the simple stupid stuff and we overlook it.

Oh and Sentra's aren't too bad. I have the best of both worlds! haha!

I have the same exact problem being talked about in this post. I told the dealer about it and they deemed my shocks to be bad. They replaced them but the sound is still there. It only occurs when going over bumps.

do you have the rear window shade? Mine does and there is often a knock during bumps that is caused by the support brackets for the rear window shade.

it's been exactly a week since I dropped off my max at the dealer for rear knocking sound, and they still have my max. they say they can't find what
causes the sound. (either they can't find, or they're not finding)
last time I checked, last fri, they said they can't find it and it's up to me
to pick up the car or leave it with them for a while.

If they say they can't find and tell me to pick it up, what should i do?
just live with it?

FINALLY GOT MY CAR BACK TODAY AFTER 3 WEEKS OF BEING PATIENT!

ok, I finally got it, no more knocking sound. I was pretty sure it came from suspension. but i was wrong. they replaced/fixed sunroof stuff, i'm not sure. they couldn't print out the receipt so they promised me to mail it to me later.

when i read it briefly, it said sunroof or something and removing headliner and blah blah, didn't read it throughly. i'll update it as soon as i get the mail.

oh, when i got it back, Airbag light was flashing...
also it seems like shimmy is developing. I get steering wheel vibration at 60-80mph. i'm not sure on this one, i still gotta check tire balancing and stuff.

i still love my max, but i think i'm gettting tired of visiting dealers. is it time for a new car?
