chrome drip edge

has anyone had a problem with the chrome drip edge that runs above doors from windshield to rear?? I noticed the "chrome" paper is peeling/lifting on mine...dealer is ordering replacements...they said they hadn't seen that before (of course that's what they said when my grill started to flake off and have now replaced many)..it's a little hard to detect, but if you run your finger in the crack you can see the chrome paper moving as you go...check it out

Just the other day when i was washing and waxing my max ---- i noticed that on the center part where the burger is - tiny tiny little spots that looked like the starts of rust and on some of the actual "teeth" of the grille where the chrome looked like it was starting to lift off too........

i'll bring it up next time i go

I expected there were others...atleast this time they didn't tell me that I shouldn't be using an automated car wash (that's what they tried to blame the grille on)...I only use the automated wash in the winter and usually thats a touchless wash...and screw the 12000mile trim warranty..these cars are practically brand new and stuff like that shouldn't happen for 8-10yrs, IMO...I have 33k on mine and they never mentioned my drip edges were outside the 12k warranty..if they do I will not be a happy camper and will most likely lose my cool AGAIN at the dealer ..they had no trouble taking my 60k for the Z and Max, all I ask is that they stand behind their product

I just realized how bad my chrome looks (only had the car a couple of days getting to know still). Below the break you see there ^^, it looks fine, nice and chromy. Above the line, the chrome is very dull almost smokey. I don't notice any peeling or flaking so it may just need a little elbow grease to bring to life.

What should I use to shine it back to chrome finish?

Is it really chrome, or plastic? Mine are discolored... The roof chrome pieces seems to be a darker chrome color then the pillers.

it not the way you clean it.. its the moisture that getting up in there and causing it to dull.. it seems that moisture is getting in below the plastic covering. the new ones don't have that plastic covering and seem to be a chrome'er peice, and are definitely built better..

get them replaced if you can.. i clean them with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel..

it's not chrome like I think of chrome (i.e. - bumpers of the 40's and 50's)..when I get mine replaced I will ask to see the old pieces to see what they are made of...I believe it is some type of chrome film that is adhered to the plastic/metal beneath...

as for cleaning...I use Zaino Z2, Z5 and Z6 everywhere on my Majestic Blue Max and my SuperBlack Z and they both shine like there's no tomorrow...I would post pics of each but I apparently don't know how

I need to get mine replaced, but I may have to pay for it (instead of it covered under warranty.

About 4 months ago, one of my employees was pressure washing some parts outside of my showroom. He apparently didn't notice my car 10 feet away (he lacked a little common sense). While he was stacking the part, he kept the trigger pressed. He accidentally aimed it at my car and it took off about 3" of that chrome strip on the side of the windshield. (Needless to say he doesn't work for my company anymore.)

I was thinking the exact same thing, just needed to ask to be sure. Thanks!

Would that cause a problem if you ever needed the windshield replace? The paint cracking and all when they remove it to install a new windshield.

no man... the new ones are made different and won't dull like the old ones... trust me...

and yes if you remove them to paint them you can break the windshield since the clips that hold that trim go under it.. even the mech's at the dealer can't replace it right...

they are not easy to replace, this needs someone who knows what they are doing..

um, well my new ones seems exactly like the original. I spoke with Nissan and they said it was never changed. I was waiting for this to get done at the dealership while Nissan called me back. I even told them how every NEW car on the lot had obvious 2 colors (top being faded).

of course there were a few reverse dents; I figure it will discolor again anyway and I can tell them again to be more careful next time.

I am hoping this is not the case...I had my grille replaced for chrome peeling @ 17K, I now have 33k and so far so good except for the drip edge...I work in a production facility and sometimes "quality control" is not quite paying attention and things slip by(which is why recalls are from vin#xxxx to #yyyy)...sooo I am hoping the new ones were made on a day when they were paying attention

as for mileage, I have 33k and am getting them replaced under the bumper/bumper 36k warranty

My grill started to peel a few days after I bought it. Looks like rocks were hitting it. I took my yime and removed the dark film that covered. Does anyone know if it will start to deteriorate? I like the look when the film was removed. I got under my skin when I saw the film peeling.

It is a plastic strip with a chrome laminent film over it... mine is starting to peel a little on the sides of it... I will post some pictures. I have come to the conclusion nissans just have bad build quality but very good drive-trains... solid V6 (VQ) motors... but the ones that are made in America just are not near as good as ones made in Japan.. although they all have there share of problems. Nissan is about on par with Toyota with the drivetrain but lacking in all else.

just got back from dealer...with 34k on my Maxima now, they replaced the chrome drip edge on both sides with no problems...looks good as new now!!!..they let me watch as the service manager did the work..I wanted to watch so I could do it myself next time if it happens again...it is actually a VERY thin piece of tin with the chrome paper attached and it slides into grooves along the windshield and snaps into clips along the roof line...all in all a very good experience at the dealer!!!! (boy I don't think I have ever said that before!!)

If you ever have to do it again by yourself maybe a writeup would help us all... just a thought.

I am afraid I would have told them what to do with their glue!! For the $$ we shelled out for the Max, I don't want parts glued together because it is inconvenient for Nissan to ship/pay for replacement of a part that never should have made it out of the factory

as for fading....the piece that runs from the front windshield and stops at the top of the rear windshield is different from the one that runs along side the rear windshield...along the rear winshield the piece is a MUCH more solid piece of metal/chromed...where as the piece along the roof is flexible tin...it would have been nice if they used the same metal from the rear windshield all the way along the roof line...I am sure they saved $20 - $50 per car for using the cheap ****

you can't repair the dullness of the chrome, but if the mech breaks a clip or the strip happens to peal off the car they glue it back on... don't get me wrong this glue is good and its weather proof and all..
