This clacking is killing me

For the past month now, there is this clacking noise coming from my car. There was some construction on the road to my house, so I just thought it was a rock or something in my tread. Today I jack up the car, pull off the tires and check ALL OF THEM....nothing

So I put it up on some ramps and go crawling underneath to see if there is a stick or something rubbing the insides of the rims....nothing. There is no wear marks on the inner rims..no rocks or anything in the tire tread....I cant find anything.

So I put the car down, torque the lugs, etc etc, go for a test drive...now the clacking noise is worse. I think it's now two individual clacks...crap..I dont know.

Any advice? It's 2000 more miles till the next dealer change..I'll let them deal with it then, but this clack clack clack clack noise is irritating the crap out of me...I need some help

I got the same problem on my 2004 Maxima. I think I have narrowed it down to the two plastic shields in the wheelweel they are both attached at the front but are loose on the other end. Not sure if there is a part that has fallen off that should be holding the other end to the body. Maybe someone without the knocking can check theirs.

I have a similar sound that I can hear at low speeds. Did the same steps of tires and what not. Will have them fix/solve it in a bit when I do my 30k.

I have a noise that occurs right at 3k RPMs. Doesn't happen all the time, but pretty much most of the time. You guys hearing your noise all the time, regardless of RPM?

It sounds like your struts went out. It is a very common problem with the 6th gen maximas. Just take it to the dealer and tell them to check out the struts and they should replace them for free. And yes, Nissan is very aware of the problem.

if you have a short ram intake, and you did not remove the stock air intake unit that is your problem..

this guy took out the intake box sitting below the air filter.

It's not at 3K RPM...is's all the time except when the car is still. You can hear it driving real slow (must have moved forwards and backwards about ten times in the driveway).

I cant tell if it's from the drivers side or not..that is where I hear it, but when I had my dad drive it on the driveway, i could not tell where the problem is coming from...it's from the front of the car...i think????

Do the struts go out on a 2005 Max? I only have 4500 miles on it..and if the struts went out, wouldnt the ride be affected? My ride is still smooth.

I am on my second Maxima know, both 2004 and I had the same problem with my first Maxima. I could not really tell were the noise was coming from other than it was the front, like somewhere in between the front tires at around 5000 miles. It sound like a hallow clunk and when I took it to the dealer they said it was a common problem and afford to replace the two front struts. After that the sound went away. I heard that some 2005 Maxima had the same problem but not all I guess they were the early production ones before Nissan realized that they had to replace the struts. Even with the annoying clunking noise the Maxima still handled well, so well that I did not notice a change in the ride handling. I hope this info helps.
