04 6spd clutch sticking

Hello everyone. I have a 04 max 6spd with about 38000 miles on it. I bought the vehicle used. The clutch seems to be sticking to the floor sometimes and gets stuck and I have to continuously push on it to get it to come back up. Any ideas?

I have an 04 with a 6-speed and just passed 38 K miles as well. I have never had this problem with a sticky clutch. The clutch is hydraulic and you may have problems with the hydraulic cylinders sticking (sounds like the master).

Good luck. The dealer is probably where you need to take it. Let us know what you (they) find.

Definitely a hydraulic problem.

Check your reservoir to see if the fluid's low. If so, fill it up and check for leaks.
The master or slave cylinder might be going out. (Another indication of this could be the color of the fluid being dirty)

If the level's not low, there might be air in the lines and it could just need a good bleeding.

good luck!

I've been having almost the same problem for the past 3000 miles. Occasionally the clutch pedal will drop. Meaning, normally when you put your foot on the clutch you have pressure right at the top. But in my car sometimes You'll have to push the clutch to about an inch off the floor before you get any pressure. It will still disengage the clutch...barely... and then a little while later it will be ok. Had 2 times so far where the car became undrivable. Once of those times was when I was driving by myself in a downpour to atlantic city, lucky me. been to the dealer 3 times where they told me they could not duplicate the problem.

Wow...i thought i was the only one! I've been having this problem for the past few months. It would happen more often if I had to sit in traffic and use the clutch alot.

I don't know....next service it's going to get looked at because I'm gonna be out of warranty soon.

In the Z06 there are springs under the pedal. We remove these springs or replace them ($6 dealer part) to stop pedal sticking. Z06ers prefer to remove the springs as the pedal feel is MUCH better without them.

Check if the Maxima has them as well.

Yeah I have an 04 6speed, with 21,000mi and I'm having this problem too. I took mine in to be serviced, and found out my fluid was very low, which explained why I was getting no pressure while pushing it and trying to shift, but it still sticks to the floor occassionlly. It only seems to happen after continuios shifting while city driving.

Dealers said they couldn't find anything wrong with the clutch itself

when my wife(ex) drove my car this very same problem presented itself and it was also raining. so i got out and pushed the car to a gas station where a guy that delt with transmissions walked over and inquired as to what was wrong so we told him and he said something about the way you drive. i have noticed that if you do second gear starts or very low rpm driving the problem usually happens. what he did to fix the problem was basically drop the clutch at about 4000-5000 rpm's and it was back to normal. something about buildup on the plate or something like that and by dropping the clutch kind of cleans it off. but ultimatly you have to change your driving style.

Interesting concept -- could be true. I hardly ever start in second gear and have never had this problem. May explain why.

not sure about you, but i notice this problem when i go to the track sometimes, not sure if it is from dropping the clutch or from featuring, i usually notice it when i almost bog out. however i'll turn my car off and when i get back in it is back to normal. so it is weird

Well I have even parked mine overnight and come back out and it will still be acting up. Just need to know the parts so I can start buying some for the swap.

Hey all,
Here's the deal with the clutch sticking.... I had the same problem and reported it while still under warranty. They told me it looked fine, but if they took the clutch apart and found nothing that I would have to pay. So I ended up just noting it in the computer. Eventually, the clutch would stick to the floor and when I tried to get it loose It was like there was no tension behind it. I was forced to shift matching RPMs until the clutch worked itself loose again. after 44000+ miles I went back to the dealership and explained the issue as this was seriously affecting safety.

They took apart the clutch and found corrosion inside. Needless to say the whole thing had to be replaced. I was in a loaner for a month while I awaited the part to come in off back order. They aren't sure how it was corroded, but it may have been from contaminants during manufacturing. Mine was one of the first few thousand off the line in 03.

While I was awaiting my part the dealership pleaded my case with Nissan since I was out of warranty and they ended up doing everything for free! I was upset about not having my car, but at least they solved the problem and I got to put miles on the dealerships loaner while I awaited its return.

FYI I had this done this past July.

Hope this helps.
-Ed

Wow, I was told that it had something to do with the clutch hydraulics? I don't know though cuz I haven't taken it in for service.

Thanks Ed for this explanation. I bought my 04 in May of 03 and will watch to be certain my clutch does not develop these problems. At over 38 K miles, I may be OK.

Thanks again.

Damn that is good to know maybe I can get the to take a look at mine. My car has 39,000 miles on it so I am in the same boat. But that is probably going to be hard to argue.
