Dash Lights Turning Off On Their Own??

The other night I was driving on a highway and I noticed my dash lights were completely off (just the driver's dash lights in front of you). I turned them back on using the thumbwheel switch and everthing was fine. When I parked at home, just before I turned the car off again, I noticed them off again, so I turned them back on again. I thought to myself "gee that is odd - is there something I am doing to cause this?". My knee wasn't anywhere near the switch. And no, I wasn't drinking - at the time .

Last night I watched for it again - nothing unusual.

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and if you have any suggestions? I am wondering if I should take the car to the stealership.

Thanks in advance.

Rare?

Though I certainly haven't looked through every message on every thread, I don't recall your problem having been mentioned on the posts I have read (I have not experienced the problem you are having). I wonder if you have a wire that is bare or a bulb that is loose, though from the manner in which you were able to get the lights turned on, it sounds like a bad switch would be a good place to start. If it's still under warranty, I'd probably go to the service department (of course, it can be an adventure getting the problem to manifest itself so that the service techs can see it).

This seems like the weekend for electrical problems. That is an issue I've never encountered or heard about. Do your gages illuminate in the daytime like they're supposed to without cutting out? This sounds like a gremlin the dealer would have to track down.

Thanks for the replies - I will just have to keep an eye on it.

It hasn't happened again, and didn't happen in the first 1.5 years.

Sounds like a very simple explaination. I've had the same issues with older cars...it just sounds like the dimmer switch is going bad. Unfortunately, you'll probably have to live with the issue for a while because when you take it in for warranty work it will probably work just fine.

Same thing happens to me occassionally. I'll ask the service dept about it the next time I'm in for service.

We have similar things happen at the shop here with potentiometers in electric scooters. They can develop a dead spot in them. Move them slightly and they're working fine as long as they're not in that dead spot.

Just have the dimmer switch replaced.
