why does the maxima trunk not swing open like the altimas trunk??? I took a look at my in laws altima, they both appear to use the same hydralic cylinders. or is my trunk busted?

mine does exactly like that too, but I like the design/mechanism of the Max's trunk hinge (?) because it doesnt pinch on any of my cargo when i close it.

 

when i open mine it never goes up by itself, to which i see nothing wrong

 

most trunk pops unlatch it and swings it open past the point where the weight of the trunk pulls it closed. IE: there shouldnt be much muscle involved to open it. This car only unlatches it, and then it sits there untill you have to pull it open.

its a pretty minute feature, but if you do alot of grocery shopping like me, and you have a weak frail, nagging, complaining wife....

Also, you don't want the trunk lid to be allowed to get fully open on its own, especially now with these winter winds blowing so hard. If a good wind blew open the trunk lid without you there to stop it, it can cause some damage to the hinges, etc.

I don't like the trunk opening all the way when I pop it. If it's windy or if someone is around they don't need to see what's in my trunk.

 

My 1978 Datsun 200SX trunk lid went all the way up when the release by the driver's seat was pulled. I made the mistake of pulling it when there was a strong wind blowing from behind, and damaged the hinge.

Until I had the body shop fix the hinge, the trunk leaked.

Having no spoiler, my '04 SL trunk lid is very easy to lift. I prefer that the trunk lid not fly all the way up when I pull the release on the driver's door.

I especially like the fact there is no hinge assembly dropping a foot into both sides of the cargo compartment when I close the trunk. I have had cars over the years when I had everything squeezed into the trunk for a two week vacation, then couldn't close the trunk because of the hinge assemblies.

I appreciate the way Nissan has set up the 6th gen trunk lid.

 

I particularly like the fact that our trunks are heavier. Feels like much better quality and, like stated earlier, is much better on windy days. Like today the wind is gusting up to 45 mph.

 

Interesting. Because our trunk lids are aluminum to make them lighter, I wouldn't think that the Altima's trunk lid is any lighter than ours (even though it is smaller). Anyway, I put my spoiler on after the fact and it adds quite a bit of weight to the trunk lid. Harder for my wife to get all her shopping bags in the trunk. +1

 

The Altima and Maxima both use aluminum trunk lids.

But the Altima uses spring torsion bars to raise the lid, whereas the Maxima uses gas struts. So the operation and feel of the opening/closing will be different.
