Painted engine bay?

I want to paint my engine cover to the matching color of my car. I like the idea of gettng a custom desing like chernmax, but I'm on a budget. For now i would like the simple paint job. I would like to do it my self instead of taking it to a body shop. Is there a place other thn a body shop where i can get the paint? Maybe something already in a aerosal can like the stuff u buy at Autozone. Im not trying to sound cheap I just want wht ever is the easiest. Any suggestion will help. Thnxs guys.

hey bud,

I also looked for a spray can one, but had no luck..

so I went to Sherwin Williams store and bought the silver paint for 12 bucks, and the the clear for 55. then had a buddy with a spray gun and a compressor shoot it.. not bad..

is automotive paint, if it can stand being out in the weather on a car, it can stand alittle engine heat I think..

no problems so far with it..

no, is not the exact "liquid silver", I think it was just a light silver color with some flake in it. I didn't pick it out, it was my painter so I dunno the part number or anything. but it was some light universal silver with some metallic in it.

I think if you mix the actual color of the car it might be more expensive, I'm not sure though. the clear was a "turbo clear" they call it, thats the most expensive item..

Hey buddy, make sure you rough it up a bit with like 1000, grit paper.. This will help it hold. You probably already know this, i just wanted to make sure you understood.. I plan on taking them off and getting them painted like chern and tek... Later, and good luck..

Somebody posted on this a while back. I don't remember who, but they listed types of high temp paint to use on the covers. I don't have search capability yet so I haven't been able to find it again.

one more thing guys, you also have to get that plastic adhesion "promotor" for plastic pieces. this will help paint stick to the plastic with minimal sanding.

you do have to clean them well and make sure you take off all the shine on them or the paint will bubble.

I painted mine at a body shop.
Don't have any problems with heat so far. It has been a couple of months.

Heres a Red Op for you. I did it myself. Ordered the paint online, they match the color to the factory code.

Don't worry about high temp paint. I've had mine done for a year and a half and had no problems to date. Still looks like new!

Agree, clear coat makes a big difference. When I get my engine cover sides sprayed, I will have them clear coated as well

Looks good, bet it would have looked even better if you would have clear coated it.

After you clear coat it, wait at least 3 months before doing any buffing or polishing.

Ok, I hate this thread!!!

My car looks naked under the hood now. Looks like I'll have to find someone to ship me some QX3 (white). I like the panels that Tekniq painted. Looks like the perfect mix of colored panels and natural bare engine.

Ramberg, where's your pic's?

mroleg, What's on your hoses that looks like chrome?

JoesRedMax, why didn't you take off the stock intake when you went with the Injen CAI, or now that your clearing the stuff are you going to leave it off?

I left mine on also, it was obviously designed as an air intake point so IMO it does too things, keeps more dirt and rain out of the engine compartment while providing cool air inside the engine compartment. IMO most people who removed them have a harder time keeping their engines clean, plus the radiator is an eye sore.

I left it on because IMO it looks better. With it off you have an empty space as well as being able to see the top of the radiator.

Looks great, like I said it just needed that sparkle. One question though, did you do it yourself or a body shop? Body shop clear coating tends to look more glass incased that's why "mroleg" looks so hot. Definitely no bust, your **** look tight...

Naw I did it myself, didn't feel like spending the $ to have a shop do it. And your right about there's shining more, but don't they bake it in an oven like gizmo? That would cause it to harden like a glaze and really shine.

No, not all car paint gets baked on, some do it to decrease the dry time, my engine cover has 3 coats of clear coat and was air dried between applications.

Ok so how much would it cost to take it to a body shop and have them paint it and clear coat it?
