RUST!! showing around skyview panel

Today another 2004 Maxima with the skyview roof showed up at my work. The owner made a point to track me down and let me know about the "rust" problem that he is having in the groove around the skyview panel. Sure enough I went out and check my car and I am also seeing rust showing through the paint in the groove at both the front and back of the panel. I need everyone to check to see if they are having this problem. I suspect you guys with not that much rain and no snow should be OK however please check as well. I have already called my Nissan guy and will have it looked at in a couple of days and I want to let him know if this is the start of yet another problem! Thanks for you input!

I went through this exact same problem about 2 months ago. I saw the "bruising" around the skyview at the front right corner and I took it to the dealer. They told me to take it to their body man. He said that it was indeed rust and it was no problem to fix it. Well he fixed it and Nissan said that it wasn't under warranty. I called Big Nissan and they confirmed that rust of that nature isn't covered under warranty. I quoted their own warranty manual and they said perforation rust is covered which is something totally different from that. I said there's no way a two year old car should have any rust on it. Basically it was my problem and they would fix it for a price. I left my car at the dealer for 4 days and I refused to pay for the work. The dealer finally called me and said that they will chalk the work up as customer appreciation. So in the end it was free but I couldn't believe it. Good luck trying to get that work under warranty.

I didn't see any the other day when I was washing her, I'll look again.

O.T. You got any pics of your car with the body colored grill in it? The grill looks nice, would like to see the whole package.

Wasn't there a recall on these sky view roofs?

yes there was a recall but it was because of them exploding/shattering because of "heat stress" in otherwards poor craftsmenship..... you have to have a certain vin number for your car to be covered under this recall.....

Sorry to dig up the dead, but I have been fighting this battle on my 04 for a few months. I had the rust forming in the corner of the skyview and I took it to the dealership. The service guy looked at it and even said that should not happen and it did not appear that I did anything wrong. He filled out the paperwork and I got a call a few weeks later saying it is not covered because there was no rust through. What BS. Any car should not have rust forming within the first five years unless around a ding, rock chip etc... So I took it to the body shop and the bill came to $600.

Just figured I would pass this along.

just read the recalls to see if your VIN is included
or call a dealer to look your number up
or call Nissan.

Speaking of rust. I have normal rock chips on the front fenders and they are both rust colored. It's in the same spot on both sides near the headlights. You won't see it unless your detailing the ride.

Just call the Nissan number and complain. There is a recall and it should be covered.

I thought I had read that it was also an issue once the skyview was replaced. I would also battle it out with Nissan regarding the rust.
