Weird Squeeking Noise Problem

Hey All, 1st post, hopefully someone can help me out.

I am getting a weird vibration/squeek that sounds like it is coming from the front passenger side. Only occurs when I am driving, and sounds like it is coming from the front dashboard. I've been told by dealers that it could be something stuck in the air system that would require having the entire dash removed, an operation far too expensive to be justified.

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated!! PM or response to this post is cool. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you're out of luck then, because Nissan warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles.....unless you bought an extended warranty, but i'm not sure what those cover.

You need someone to ride with you and try to pinpoint the source. Rattle in the cabin can echo around making you guessing the wrong directions.

I've had numerous passengers confirm that it's coming from (or sounds like) the rear passenger side in the front near the dash.

Unless you have an extended warranty, the only warranty you have left is Nissan's powertrain warranty to 60 K miles (or 6 years). This problem is not covered by that warranty.

I'm confused by Post # 6. Is it near the dash on the right, or is it coming from the rear passanger seat on the right? I suspect that it is coming from the dash per your first post.

I would first replace the in-cabin air filter (it probably needs to be done, anyhow), and see if moving all of that "stuff" under the dash on the right makes any changes in this noise. There is a thread on this work that tells you how to do this replacement (or the dealer will charge you double the cost of the filter to change it).

This thread discusses how to save money on the filter (and how easy the work is to do):
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=485987

This thread discusses how to change the filter and the fact that there is a diagram in the Owners Manual:

I agree that you can learn to live with noises when the cost of trying to fix them are high with no certainty they will be fixed after you spend all of that money. The in-cabin air filter is worth doing. Afraid I don't have any other relatively cheap suggestions after that.

I've had the same issue but it sounds as if it's coming from the passenger side door panel. Than again it could be the PS2 I had installed underneath the dashboard. Up until tommorow I've had the PS2 held by metal brackets, but tommorow I'm finally getting a custom box done for it. So I'm not really sure if it's the PS2/metal brackets or the passenger side door. By tommorow I will be able to definately know though.

I have a similar sound that I would describe as an intermitent, very faint, high pitched tone coming from the front passenger area. At first I thought it might be the stereo, but it keeps making the sound with the radio off, so that's not it. I can only hear it at speeds <40 mph and it might be somehow linked to the throttle position on very light acceleration, but that is not for sure. Sound similar? Any ideas?

Have you checked the heater blower motor? It's in that area and could make a sound like that. Perhaps something caught in it or a dry bearing?

Where is the heater blower motor and how do I check it? Or is it something I need to have the dealer examine?

Does anyone think that this noise could be related to any of the TSBs, such as the heat shield?

As far as removing the dash.....I would never agree too it again unless nothing is working. From when I bought the car the blower would not blow air around the feet so I went back and they took apart the whole dashboard only to order parts. Went back week later, left it for a day, come back to pickup and they said they need to change the entire assembly because the part didn't fix the problem. Come back again and its fixed.........BUT

every time I hit a pot hole the whole dash just rattles. It feels like the car is bottoming out almost every time. My brother also has a max and his is smooth over the holes. We both just changed our suspensions and his is still smooth while mine is even worse. CRAP!

I am starting to isolate my noise a little bit more. It seems to happen at a certain RPM ~1800 RPM, at medium to low speeds at light throttle (~10-20% throttle). I'm guessing it is some sort of heat shield or other metalic part vibration, but I've inspected the heat shields I can find and they seem to be OK with no cracks and they are not loose. I probably didn't find all the heat shields though. Anyone have other ideas? TIA
