5spd auto tranny slipping

i have an 04 se with 30k on it, had it for 2 years

i put it in drive the other day and pressed the pedal not hard, but lightly and then the car suddenly jerked really hard then started going..

this is really odd to me..any ideas? still under warranty?

also can nissan replace spark plugs free of charge and why is my engine squeaking when i start on cold start? thanks for your help.

R u sure that indicates slippage? My car has 60,000 0n it and always is jerky shifting from 2-3 when the engine is cold.

From what he's saying its from a stop. So it's slipping when it goes into first. My 98 did that and that was the first sign the tranny was going, granted that happened at 130K.

defiant - Has this only happened that one time?

Have you confirmed the tranny fluid level is correct? Clean? Without odor? Without any discoloration? Under normal driving, the fluid should still be in very good shape at 30K. Nissan feels the fluid can go for 105,000 miles, as long as the inspections every 15K show the fluid to still be good. Not that anyone here on the ORG has any intention of going that far before changing.

Did the jerk happen as it went into first . . i.e., the first thing that happened from a dead stop? If the jerk came just after the car was already moving, then it could have been the shift from first to second.

If you can get this event to happen again, it will be essential that you get it fixed under Nissan's 5 year 60 month powertrain warranty. If this had happened during brisk accelleration, the jerk could easily damage the tranny.

Since we're on this subject........would using the tiptronic often have to do with any of these issues that he is experiencing? I have heard that Nissan's tiptronic is pretty much "bulletproof" to getting broken, and just tonight my friend told me how he and his dad raped a G35X rental with tiptronic and afterwards the car jerked and squeaked and all...........so is that a BS, or depends on how you use it?

Ok let me clarify. Sorry about that. Yes, this was from a stop. I stepped on the pedal lightly and there was a HUGE jerk and it was not a shift. I was doing 5MPH. It was slipping for some reason. I tried to see if it did it again, and it did..and it kept continuing on. I really hope it's nothing big..comeon its only got 30K on it!! And it was in drive not the tiptronic mode...does tiptronic make it go faster?

I've never experienced a jerk shift from a stop, but once in a while
gears 2-3 in traffic would jerk. I find that annoying.

Yup my 98 did that and banged into first. Took it to the dealer and they told me trans was going. Next day bought a 05, month later the 98's trans took a dump....

If your saying it jerks when you shift form park to drive when it's cold that's normal my 04 will jerk from park to drive when it's cold but after it heats up it's smooth again

I use tiptronic all the time. No problems at all. I had the dealer perform a flush at 35K miles so to be sure. I am up to almost 36k and 2 years so we'll see.

Do you know what kind of fluid they put back into it?

!PrjctMax! - With this being the new Nissan 5 speed tranny, the warranty requires that Nissan's special 6th gen 5 speed tranny fluid be used. It is considerably more expensive than normal tranny fluid, such as would go in Nissan's 4 speed autos used in early '04 SLs.

Defiant - using the tiptronic might enable some drivers to accellerate very slightly faster in that it makes it easier to rev the engine to the redline on each shift. But I am one who feels no need to redline the car, except in very unusual circumstances. And the tiptronic has no effect on the maximum speed of the car.

With a 5 year/60K power train warranty, you should not have to worry about 'eating' the cost of getting this fixed. I feel that, except at startup in very cold situations, your tranny should not be doing this.

It is extremely weird. Also there's another thing that just started coming up. In a cold start, (just started 2 days ago), after you turn the engine over and RPM goes to 2-3 it makes an extremely extremely weird noise that it never used to make before. I might be lucky enough to get a vid and post on here..would that be ok?

I was having similar problems with my se, but had 71k on it. One of the reasons I got rid of it, shouldnt have trans probelms under 150k in my opin. anyway, take it to the dealer, it may just have to be reprogrammed. If that doesnt do it(most likely will) demand they get into it more.
