There were problems early on with the glovebox door not being exactly aligned with the dash, but Nissan fixed that for '05, and an extended black rubber nipple they developed made realigning the badly aligned '04 glove box doors fairly easy.

But this is the first time I have heard about a glove box rattle. I would first have someone else drive while I gave full attention to the rattle. Try light pressure with your fingers at all points within the box.

If you find a point at which light pressure stops the rattle, then the problem may be something like a small cable or wire being too close to the box at that point, rattling against the box whenever the motion of the car causes it to vibrate.

Is the rattle also there when the glovebox door is open? When the glovebox is totally empty?

Sometimes, in such situations, I find that if I simply push rather firmly at all points within the glove box, something will move just enough to stop the rattle.

If all else fails, you can take the glovebox out (method is described somewhere up in the stickies in the 'replacing the cabin filter' section of maintenance) and find what seems to be touching the outside of the glove box, them move it away from where the box will be.

At least this is an annoyance, and not something that will strand you in the middle of nowhere, or cost thousands to fix.

Where can I get this rubber piece for my glove compartment? Does it have to be Nissan direct?

I have a rattle over there, no clue what's causing it, but the glove compartment has been uneven with the dash since I got the car. I didn't realize this was a chronic problem with the 04 SE. I replaced my air filter recently, it was good to do but did not solve the rattle. I did not see anything back there that would cause a vibration with the glove compartment.

wmanimal - The most common alignment problem with the '04 Maxima glovebox door is that the right corners tended to stick out a tad above the dash, and the top left corner tended to sink somewhat below the level of the dash.

By replacing the short black rubber bumber (nipple) against which the upper left corner of the door rests with a taller rubber bumper (Nissan part # 68399-7Y000), this pushes the upper left corner out to where it is even with the dash.

In case the part number does not show up clear on this post, the last 5 positions are 7 'WYE' 000, not 7 'VEE' 000.

When the taller nipple forces the upper left corner to move out a tad, the bottom hinge then serves as a fulcrum around which the slightly flexible door rotates, and causes the right edge of the door to sink back level with the dash.

It worked absolutely perfectly with mine, took only five minutes to replace, and of course, since this was a defect that came with the car, Nissan paid parts and labor. In reality, my dealer 'ate' the bill, as the nipple was so cheap it wasn't worth doing warranty paperwork on.

The only 'hitch'? The dealer probably won't have the longer nipple in stock, and it may take a week or two for him to get it. But it was certainly worth the wait for me.

My glove compartment is also not alligned properly. I am about to buy this rubber piece to fix the problem. I havent looked in the car yet, but all I do is take the old one off and put the new one on?

killah - Yep.

It is a lot like replacing a valve stem. Don't worry if the old one breaks as you pull it out. And you need to lubricate the bottom of new one in order to get it to squeeze into the hole. A little soap should do the trick.

How exactly does this work in terms of cost and installation? Is it covered by any warranty as a defect? I called a local dealer and they said I have to pay for it. Also, is there a sticky on how to install this?

wanimal - As I mentioned in my post of 11:58PM on Sept 14th, this is a low-cost item that is absolutely covered under Nissan's basic 3 year 36K mile warranty.

Even if your warranty has expired, a dealer who cares about his customers would 'eat' the cost of this in a heartbeat. The part itself probably cost well under a buck to make, and should 'list' at no more than two or three bucks.

As I also said in an earlier post in this thread, installing this extended glove box bumper is very similar to replacing a valve stem in a wheel. Open the glove box door, glare menacingly at the OEM black rubber bumper (nipple) in the upper left corner of the glove box opening, then pull it out with an everyday common pliers.

Doesn't matter if it breaks as you are pulling it out. Lubricate the bottom of the new one (soap should do the trick) and work it into the hole the old one was in. Job is done.

Took the mechanic at my dealer's about two or three minutes to 'do the trick' right there at the 'checkin' line; didn't even bother to take the car back to the service area.
