MPG Fuel Efficiency Reading

I have read in past threads that some 6th gens have MPG reading of 24 mpg efficiency. I don't know if there is something wrong with my console or car, but I have never had better gas milage better than 19.8mpg whether city or highway driving.
Is this normal? please help

Stupid question: are you resetting the fuel mileage when you fill the tank each time?

Are you sure you are resetting the computer and not just displaying the mileage? The next time you are on the highway, press and hold the FUEL ECON button for a few seconds. Hold the button until the mileage appears as *.*. Then give the car a minute or so to calculate and display it’s new average mile per gallon. The number displayed will change every minute or so and reflect your car’s average mile per gallon from the time you last reset the computer. If you are on the highway and it remains at 19.8 mpg, there is something wrong with your car.

You need to do a manual calculation to determine if your Max's computer is accurate. I followed both readings for about a year and found than my computer is very close (on average) to the results doing a manual calculation. I've come to believe that my computer is actually more accurate than the manual calculation -- because it is impossible to fill a 20 gallon tank to the exact same level each time you fill it up. If you fill to a lower point, the calculated mileage will be higher than it really is. If you fill to a higher point, it will be worse than actual.

Check out your readings by doing the calculations to see if they are accurate. And be certain to reset the mpg by pushing the button as discussed above.

I always reset the "fuel economy" button everytime I fill up, and I always get b/w 29 - 30mpg (I drive 90% highway btw). Even when I do a manual calculation, I still get about the same figures. Maybe because I don't rev it up to 4K rpm as often as I would want to...

I'll sure be interested to know how someone can get 30mpg out of the max too.

I get around 25 mpg on freeway, cruising around 80 mph, with smooth acceleration - not much sudden burst of speed or down shift.

Regarding manual calculation, what I do is reset trip as well as fuel economy meters after fill up. Check during next fill up how many gallon I have to refill and how many miles travelled, compare that to the computer figure.

Repeated this for as long as I owned my Max. Conclusion is the computer fuel economy reading is pretty close to my manual calculation. + or - 0.50 mpg

Forgot to mention I average 22.8 to 23.6 city and freeway combined. On rainy season the fuel economy suffers, average down to low 21's.

My average for a very long time was 18.2

Now its thankfully upto 20 flat actually. It fluctuates around 20 sometimes but mostly get 20 now, depending on freeway or highway driving. Also I always fill with Premium.

I've gotten 32mpg on hwy (100 miles), not slow. The gas needle barely went below full.

I get 21-24mpg city, 32.3 highway miles. Now that does happen most often when my trip is 2 1/2 hours or longer. City is a variable though.

Hmm... a few folks are getting over 30MPG doing 80mph on freeways. I always drive about 80 on freeways but never seen my MPG go that high... wonder what's the difference?

My max is 2005 SE, spoiler + mud flaps, with everything else factory standard. I use premium gas. What about you?

Also, have you guys mod your max?

I'm really curious.

I just purchased an '07 SE with the CVT trans. Immediately after picking the car up, I took it straight onto the highway for a trip out of town. The mileage was a very dissapointing 24.8 all highway. My combined mileage is currently at 15.8 with a very light foot.

What's with the 21/28 figures they advertise? I really like the look of the new maxima with it's larger rear spoiler and bigger tailpipes.

Once the car is broken in, the MPG will increase. The 1/4 mile time too...

Of course. Fill up in gas station close to freeway exit. Reset trip and fuel economy meter. Get on to freeway, drive for at least half an hour at steady 80MPH, the best I've seen is no higher than 25MPG.

Just for reference, I have an '06 6sp with 3,900 miles on it. I did what you said a week ago. Filled up next to the freeway, reset the MPG on the display, and drove 220 miles at an average of 75-90 mph, but cruise set on 80 MPH for most of the trip.

When I got home, I had 25.4 MPG as an average.

In the city I get 12-16mpg (90% of my driving). Best I got was 30.5mpg, no A/C 65mph on cruise (Lowered car and CAI probably helped). Highway I get 27-28mpg while driving above posted limits. And yes, I do reset each time and match with manual calculations.

Tire pressure may be a factor for some.
