spare keys

Do they have to be programmed by the dealer or is there a way of doing ourselves. I havent had a chance to browse the owners manual since the woman has it at work. Dealer only gave us one key. Thanks in advance.

Only dealers can do this. Go back and have them make you another one. They should give you 2 keys, remote you'd probably have to buy.

The dealer should never have let the car leave the lot without two keys. This is either an oversight or a shady dealer.

If the dealer received the car with only one key, his first step, even before putting the car on display for sale, should have been to make/program a second key.

I mean, it isnt like you can ease by the local hardware store on the way home and have a few made.

I did, and the only thing they-aftermarket keys- will operate is the lock/unlock feature on our doors. A key made at a hardware store doesn't have the chip, so it won't complete the circuit. Your car will try and start but all you'll get it noise...no fuel is released!

I bought the remote and a spare key on EBAY. I paid $26.00 for the remote and $10.00 for an uncut key with a chip (Brand new), however, you will have to have the dealer program the chip on the key. Some dealers may charge you to program the key. Way cheaper than purchasing from the dealership.

Yeah, you should get it done before you lose your only key. It's gonna cost you more than $150.

I would encourage anyone who owns a 6th gen Maxima and has only one key to seriously consider springing for a second key.

Granted, a second key can be expensive. But the only possible purpose for one made at the hardware store would be to get inside the car if you locked your ONLY REAL key inside.

Think of the inconvenience of suddenly having NO key for your car. NO way to drive your precious Maxima. Not a very pleasant thought. My wife and I each carry a key and remote when we travel, just in case . . .

New cars MUST come with two keys. Period.

And no matter how much I loved a particular used car I was considering buying, there would have to be a committment by the dealer IN WRITING to furnish two working keys before I would close the deal. It is so much easier for this to be handled by the dealer than by busy folks such as us.

I was charged $50.00 for the prgramming, however, it was way cheaper than purchasing through the dealership. It also depends on the dealership, they may program the key for free. I was not that lucky, but you can try.

Dealer sold me my used Max with one key and wanted to charge me $150 for a new one. I opted to buy an un-cut spare on E-bay for $15 and had it programmed at the dealer for $45. For 2 mins of work!! I guess that's better than $150 though.

Yeah, I only got 1 key and remote too. I bought a 2nd remote from Ebay for 10.81 shipped, and my good friends friend is a Tech at Nissan and he got me a new key, cut, and programmed for a 6pk of Budweiser!
