cold start

on cold starts( car sitting over night) when i start it up in the morning it ticks pretty loudly for about the first 10 seconds of running, then it settles down to nothing

it will also happen once in a while, at low rpm 2k or so, tick for a little bit then die out.

dosnt do it while revving, other than that the car feels amazing.

anyone know wtf this is? i tried looking around under the hood for the source of the noise, and it seems to be on the passenger side, idk where about though.

Thanks

marshallc - I'm not an engine man, but felt badly that you asked a reasonable question and got no real answer.

I would guess you are hearing the valves tapping. This is something I have heard in various vehicles I have driven over the years. As long as it is only for a very short time at startup, and does not seem to be getting worse over time, I would not be overly concerned.

Surely an 'engine' person will post his thoughts here sometime later today.

Check your engine oil level first, then report back.

While you're at it, check the viscosity range of the oil as well. You are supposed to be using 5W-30. If you are using a heavier oil, the valve lifters may be initially short on oil at start-up--especially in cold weather.

oil level is fine, yesterday when it was warmer out 45 instead of 15, it ticked like 4 times on startup then was quiet.

once in a while while driving i can hear the ticking, if i clutch it, or put it in neutral and let it idle for a second it goes away.

i was thinking its something rattling around due to vibrations of a cold start, but now it happens once in a while while driving.

car gets the same gas milage, feels the same to; so i doubt its something i should worrie about; but i would like to know wtf it is incase it is something that could be a problem.

Thanks

From what others have written, I'm sure you have already gathered that your ticking noise is probably the result of oil starvation during the first few seconds your engine requires to pump oil from the oil pan to the top of your engine. If you turn off the engine after it has run for a minute or more, and then restart it, do you still hear ticking? How many miles are on your engine? The fact you occasionally hear the same ticking noise at low rpms, after the car is at normal operating temperature, may be important. It might be wise to talk to a mechanic.

but in response to you I'd say with the whole situation of turbo care is extreme u know? Ive had a audi for about 2 years now and Ive spend way to much with turbo maintence just becuase of wear. and then if it doesnt have a timer the engine needs to be idled to cool the oil down (if you drive at higher RPM's) so that the oil doesnt cook the turbo and the next thing you know you got smoke comming out of your exhaust meaning turbo has leaked oil. so yea firgure 10k a year into maintence for me but then agian these are audi turbos maybe something else is better? but just sharing my experience with the whole turbo situation

i just changed the oil due to not knowing the weight that the dealership put in and it looking to have to much, some fresh mobile 1 5w30 and it hasnt ticked yet, ill keep you updated though.

alright its back. me and my buddy have almost 100% come to the conclusion that its not the motor.

something on the front, passenger side is loose and vibrating causing a ticking sound that happens on cold starts, and from 45 mph to about 60, getting faster with speed.

its nothing from the top half of the engine, and forsure on the passenger side, but im not about to stick my hand down there grabbing things to see if it stops the rattle.

anyone have any ideas?

Don't lose a limb, and don't stick your hand down there when the engine is running (blets = half the arms your were born with)
