Gut the Nav, 6cd and cassette

Gut the Nav, 6cd and cassette
and replace it with one of those Pioneer Nav units with the screen. Can it be done? I'd like to hear from those who started with Factory Nav and Bose in a 6th gen and successfully had an aftermarket navi unit installed. Here are a few of my concerns...
1.) I know nothing of car stereo installs, therefore a self install and very technical jargin is out of my league.
2.) The screen that is currently displaying the system info/nav/radio. Can it be used or will it be useless. Is the radio and nav tied into the system that displays gas mileage, maintenance info and display control? I like having that info available so I know when I have to rotate the tires and change the oil.
I noticed that some people have the nav unit closer to the bottom, replacing the 6 disc and cassette. That is fine with me, but has anyone been able to replace the screen on top with a touch screen to keep it more visible?
3.) after reading posts, I'm convinced that aftermarket nav has more features than stock. Besides, I get the cold CD skips, and my left channel on the cd player cuts out..additionally, I dont want to buy an ipod interface to use on a unit that is half dead. And I want better sounding audio through bose speakers.
I'll need an installer in NJ to make this all happen for me. Best Buy, Circuit City dont seem like they could handle this. I'm looking to spend about 1,000 for the unit, and no more than 400 for a clean problem free install. Thanks for the feedback guys!!!

Good luck finding the a unit for 1000 cuz the pioneer avic is about 1700. As far as the install there shouldnt be a problem finding someone to install it for 400 I think even less. Oh and I think the pioneer is one of the best out there aside from alpine

Heres an idea... if you already have a factory nav.. why change it.. all you have to do is integrate it to an after market radio/mp3/dvd player ... convert the nav screen to play your movie and nav (cant be done at the same time ).. you will probably spend less .... just my 2cents..

I believe there is an alpine unit that can integrate the nav you have now and use it as a screen for IPod info and watch movies. Can't remember what it is called but I would check www.alpine.com
