04 Max: Mileage and Recommended Servicing

Folks,
I have roughly 71K miles on my 04 Max SE. It was bought used with around 40K miles. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to any servicing that should be done in general, or if there's anything in particular I should have checked? The dealer wanted me to come in for the 60K servicing, but I do not wish to be overcharged for things that I don't necessarily need checked. Thanks for any input!!

I'd actually like answers to this too, just hit the 74K mark!

I'd take the car to a reputable mechanic to have it checked out..
Check all the fluids, filters, exhaust, bearings etc..
I believe in the manual, there should be some sort of maintenance schedule you can refer to.

You probably have no way of knowing what the previous owner did to this car, and when (if you can tell, that would help). You should change engine's air filter and the in-cabin air filter (located behind the glove box).

Some items on the list above are overkill, IMHO. Unless your driving is extreme, you only need to do an oil and oil filter change every 7,500 miles (read the owners manual). This is particularly true if you run synthetic motor oil. Changing at this interval will keep your drivetrain warranty good for 60 K miles or 6 years, whichever comes first. (You have already past this mileage, but others read these threads.) It is also good to rotate your tires -- I rotate mine with each oil change (having the right front wheel off makes changing the filter much easier).

The other items in the list above should at least be checked to see if they need to be done. You don't say what kind of transmission you Max has. Whichever one, you probably should change the fluid (if a 6-speed) or have a trannie flush if an automatic.

Nissan says that the spark plugs need to be replaced at about 100 K miles. So 60 K miles (list above) is overkill. This is particularly true given that gasoline is now ultra-low-sulfur. Go with the Nissan recommendation on this one.

I also believe that when using the Nissan (or Honda or Toyota) coolant, the coolant only needs to be changed every 60 K miles. If you don't know when it was changed, you probably should do that, too. Be certain that it is replaced only with Nissan, Honda or Toyota coolant (I would buy the cheapest of these 3). Check out the Fluids and Lubes section of this site for other recommendations.

It's all in the manual, it's a shame that nobody looks through it.

oh yeah, I agree but I think people are skeptical as to what the previous owner(s) have done to the car if it was bought used. I bought my car at 34k and did all the schedule maintenances done on it despite what I thought the previous owner did just to be on the safe side. My lone thing to do is the tranny flush which im contemplating...I'll probably get it done soon for a piece of mind before i put any additional miles on it..

yeah, all that stuff is in the back of the manual. you can just tick off what you did etc. I just felt bad for madmik because he basically just typed out what was already in the manual. I hope he types fast because thats a whole lot of stuff to type out...hehe

Cut and paste. I downloaded an electronic copy from NISSAN's web site.
