Nasty Noise On Start-Up...

Hello all,

I have not been/posted on this site in quite some time now (been really busy with business). Anyway,

My 04 Max SE makes a nasty grinding/metal rubbing noise when I first start the car after it sits for a day or so. But after the car has been driven, or has warmed-up, the nosie is gone (only makes noise on start-up). Did any of you have this problem, or know what it is? Last....... When I put my foot down on the gas hard/punch it, there is a crazy rattling sound coming from underneath. I think it might be a heatshield, but it sounds more like air escaping out fast + rattle.

Can any of you guys help me with this? I will really appreciate it. Thank you!

Have you checked your belts, what about the plastic shield underneath? Just throwing stuff out there.

Open the hood and start the car. Which side does the noise come from? Mine makes a noise from the passengers side where the belts are...but I don't think it is the belts. Its the same strong metallic ticking. Mine doesn't go away with time but becomes less pronounced. I sprayed some belt dressing on the belts and it *seemed* to help for a little but only lasted two days.

My car was making a noise on start up also. I took it to the dealer and it turned out to be the timing chain tensioner. They swapped it out and it works perfectly.

I have been researching the 04+ Maxima's now for about 2 months to possibly purchase one. I figured id chime in since this is the exact reason why i still havent pulled the trigger on the car yet. From what i have read on numerous occasions is that the clicking that is there at start up and then gradually goes away after the car warms up has to do with the timing belt retainer. I cant confirm this 100% because i PERSONALLY have not taken the car apart and fixed it with my own two hands. But from what i have read from others having the same problem and taking it into the dealer its the same on going problem.
I have no idea how it is caused and or if its just a common defect among these motors.
Here is a video that somebody put up to give an example of what the noise that he was experiencing.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hrr2mRPRZ4g
My guess is if your is similar thats your problem. Good luck to you and i hope this helps.

Here is my question - I would hate to pay an actual Nissan dealer to look at this car. If it is one of these issues, would a good mechanic be able to deal with this (timing belt retainer) or should I suck it up and take it to Nissan?

Joshua- Thats really a personal preference call to be honest with you. I personally dont trust anybody and because of it i do all of my own work. If you arent the DIY type and have a reputable mechanic you have used in the past and he can cut you some slack on the bill then of course but only if hes trusted. BUT the benefit of taking it to a Nissan dealer is obvious, this is probably a very common situation for these cars and they are probably very familiar with the problem and know exactly what bolt to turn and exactly what to go after to remedy it without haste. So it really is a toss up. Im sure any decent mechanic can handle the job especially if you tell him what it is and whats the common diagnosis for what hes fixing at least hes not going at it blind. Good luck to you.

A little bird told me this happens quite a lot with 6th gens and they change them all the time at the dealer.

The powertrain warranty only goes to 6 years or 60 K miles, whichever comes first.

I have 65 K miles on my 04 (bought May of 03) and have not had this problem.

The 100K warranty should cover this if it's an internal part? where is it located outside the motor

Well I had my ac compressor, engine mounts, belts, and some other things already replaced under extended (75K GOLD) warranty and the dealer never gave me hell. With the a/c compressor replacement the warranty practically paid for itself already.

Do you know by chance what was the part number of the timing chain tensioner? Perhaps 13070-7Y000? Was the repair covered under waranty or you had to pay for it...? Thanks

Can you ask your bird if there could be some other problems, for example - the lifters?

gold silver and bronze I think. It had to do with differen coverage and rental I think. I have gold and so far the dealer hasn't refused anything, also get a rental every time I shop up which is something i certainly apreciate.

I'm having absolutely the same rattling everyday when the engine is cold... That stupid noise lasts for + - 10sec and then slowly dissapers... Is this really the timing chain tensioner...?

Any info/update would be much appreciated :I

I bought my '04 SL with appox 50k miles with that noise. It would go away after 20 seconds or so....

I'm at 114k miles and lately, its been getting worse. Like some1 mentioned b4, I also hate starting my cold engine around others. they look at me and ask what the noise is. i'll leave it as is for now and see if it gets any worse. I'll deal with the noise.

I know that feeling A friend of mine asked me if i bought a diesel or so...

Hopefully we don't have the VTC sprocket issue like some of the 5,5th gen owners does... Here's the TSB - http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/NTB03-060.pdf

I personally have the same problem on cold starts. 04 SE 6MT 103 000 km's. But a while ago, it started making the same repeated noise while driving normaly. ( it's like the clicking frequency followed the rpm's) One day, i go to get an oil change and as I'm driving out, I noticed the noise was gone, but it gets back when i get close to the 5000 km intervals on the oil changes. Would anyone know if this could cause any damage if not serviced in the near future?

I recently got an 05 max and have this same problem. The noise decreased a bit after I changed the oil. I used a Mobile 110? filter but the sound was still there. The mechanic that did the oil change said the previous owner barely changed the oil and that the sound would go away with time. I went to the dealer and they said it's common on all 6th gens, some more than others, and increases with time. They said the oil primer pump is the culprit but there is no fix for it. The tech told me that OEM filters have a valve that prevents the oil from draining back into the filter unlike after market filters. The reason the sounds stops after a 10 to 20 seconds is due to the oil circulating and lubricating the engine after being drained from a period of the car being off. I'm currently using Mobile 1 5w30 full synthetic oil. I was going to go back to the stock oil filter first before switching to a 10w30 full synthetic oil.
