Had a fire under my car......

So I'm driving home from Philly tonight, get to my exit off the expressway (15 miles later) and I start to smell a smell like someone was burning wood. Didn't think much about it and drove and it got worse.....lol. Came up to the next light and started seeing smoke in the air and somone pulled up besides me and yelled there's a fire under you car. I immediatly pulled off to the side of the road and when I did so a cardboard box come loose from under my car and was on fire in the middle of the street. Cops were there and put it out and gave my a car a look over to make sure nothing was still burning.

I think I must have picked the box up when i was in Philly...not sure how long it was on fire.........I was going 65+ on the expressway so I couldn't smell anything. I think the box must have caught my y-pipe and been hooked on that.

Car seems ok but should I bring it to the shop and let them check it out? Not sure what kind of damage a burning box would do under the car but my nerves are shot from this (just got home...lol)

Phewww....thank god it was just a box. Your thread title pulled me in from the 5th Gen forums.

I've had that happen to me but a dang plastic trash bag melted to the exhaust. It was a god awful smell. I had to pull over as well and see if I was in flames.

at least crawl under the car and take a look. make sure it didn't melt any wiring or anything.

If you don't know what you're looking at under there, take it to a shop and ask them to look it over. be sure to tell them what happened so they know what to look for.

They probably didn't mess with you because they could see that you would snap them in half if they did!

Check that bad boy out and make sure everything is alright

It could have been worse. No harm in having the dealer check it out.

Should I put the OEM y-pipe back on before I take it to the dealer or leave the catless pipe on?

Did you get it checked out?

I doubt the dealer would give you any gruff over the aftermarket parts... Mine would'nt.

They said to bring it by Monday morning. I'm about to take the car for a spin...first time since last night.

Reminds me of when I ran over a hard hat when I had my old RX-8. Thought I was high enough when I ran over it. Dragged it for a good while before I could safely pull over. No smoke nor fire though. Have a Maxima now... think it has a higher ground clearance.... Hmmm, wonder where that hard hat is?

Just take it to a gas station and let them jack it up and look if nothing looks out of ordinary (melted, burned). Check, tip and leave.
