Is a y pipe street legal?

I have been wanting to get one of these, as it seems like a pretty cheap and easy way to gain some real HP... However, it seems like I keep seeing things suggesting that they are not street legal. Do our cars have a catalytic converter in the y pipe? I was looking through the fsm, and the only cats that I could see there seemed to be connected to the exhaust manifolds (one on each side, I assume just before the y-pipe). I do not have to pass smog here in NC, but I have to get an annual inspection, which includes a line that says - "catalytic converter present". Just wondering if this will be something to get me in trouble....

Yes, the Y-Pipe does include the catalytic converter. However, Cattman sells them in both with and without catalytic converter. There is a large difference in price though. The install is a 30 to 60 minute installation, so if they give you some trouble about not having a catalytic converter you could always run home and re-install the stock one.

Hmmm. I wonder if the guys at the shop would tell me if they actually look under there or not.....

They are trained to look and so are cops (well in CA at least) who go through classes to spot illegal 'street racing' mods.

However if you don't need to smog and can buddy up to one of them, you might get away with it.

Even if the cat is missing, we still have two other cats, so I'd point that out to anyone who thought they needed to know. I doubt cops would know that there are 3 cats on our cars. When I get headers, I will make sure there is a cat on the y pipe. I do want to remain environmentally friendly.

Good point... I will just be armed with the diagram from the fsm showing the two other cats....

This is what I love about Alabama no inspections.

But then again they can drive just about any piece of crap on the road which really sucks.

We have a bunch of what I love to call skeeter killers because they smoke so bad. The funny thing is they think it's cool.

I think they'd have a similar "car" profiling technique and go after sports cars, ricers, etc. Who's going to think someone wants to using a 4 door sedan for "street racing"...

Speaking about Cattman Y-pipe

I called him today for updated price on both models. Here is what Brian gave me as prices

Y-Pipe w/o Cat: $349.99

Y-Pipe w/ Cat: $524.99

He also is aiming for the headers to come out in Jan 2008. But he said that this project can surely take longer so no quoting this. lol

I used to have the CE y-pipe before I installed the HotShot headers and it did say only for off road use. I never had a problem with inpections or the police.

Hey Grim, I just got my Y-Pipe on today. I took a bunch more pics and may do a quick write up just for kicks. Here is a side-by-side before putting on the new pipe. Also, for you weight conscious folks out there I weighted both units.

STOCK = 14lbs 2oz.
Cattman = 11lbs 6oz.

Took her out for a nice drive and there is certainly a noticeable improvement in pickup and response. Sounds better too. Not louder, just better (combined with Injen CAI & Magnaflow 14816's). Hard to explain but kind of "even's out" the growl a bit while still giving off a great exhaust note.

Group Deals section. Cattman thread for 2004-2007. Or wait a few weeks. I believe RacingLinePerformance.com should have one soon (PM a guy named Taz).

Hey Mack...

Do you know if there is a HP/TQ difference between the 2 versions that Brian offers?

I asked this questions on Taz thread but no answer there.

I did ask Brian that when I was putting in my initial order. If I'm not mistaken he said the difference was negligible as the cat he provides is high flow. Obviously it is at least somewhat restrictive but he said it wouldn't be a huge difference at all.
