6th Gens and Transmission problems
2004 SE automatic transmission - ~100,000 miles
I'm starting to have issues with mine. I first noticed it when I would try to shift from reverse to drive on the fly. It took longer than it should to engage, so when it actually did the RPMs were at maybe 2k and it slams into gear.
Now I occasionally notice when it switches from 2nd to 3rd. It's not nearly as smooth as it used to be. I hope I don't have to replace it, as that's not in the budget right now.

The solution to auto-trannie problems (I had them in a 98 Olds before I got my Max) is the 6-speed manual. I have it and would not trade it.
Nissan made a mistake dropping that trannie option starting in 2007 -- so I will have to buy a different badge (possibly a Altima) when it comes time to replace my Max.

Sure. There are two codes p0340 and code p0345 is for the other one (Bank 1 and bank 2). The repair and pics are here on this site but I'll have to dig up and post...give me some time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aisin_AF33_transmission here is the answer confirmed by Wikipedia, which we all know is FACT. No really though makes sense. Says the transmission can handle up to 243ft lb of torque. Well the 6th gen puts out 255ft lbs of torque. So in reading this I now have confirmation that I was @#*&ed from the beginning by NISSAN. Also tells me that a Beefed up Valve Body and Torque Converter might be the solution. Of course would get internals replaced if I got those replaced. Ohh and I found that our car DOES have a transmission filter. Nissan is full of crap. I will be getting that replaced here in the next couple of days. Have to order part and wait for shipping. Part number is 92800 and costs about $40. Shouldn't be hard to replace, however have to replace tranny fluid which will cost alot more than the filter.
I just purchased a used 2005 maxima 3.5SE 2-3 weeks ago with 61.5K miles on it. It runs great but I noticed that when I accelerate from a complete stop from 1st to 2nd gear it doesn't so much jump but slows down significantly like i am breaking while the rpms climb to about 2000-2300 and then eventually shifts into 2nd. Third gear comes quickly after with no problem but very quickly. This problems tends to dissapear later on while driving. I am concerned about this car.
It was purchased from a non-nissan dealer. The warranty is 2500K or 60days whichever comes first. I ahve only put 500 miles on it since. I am getting it checked by a dealership on Monday. I hope it's not the tranny but after extensive reading on here I am only being wishful at best. I'll post back later with results of the checkup

I have a 04 SE which was a late year production model, the in-service date was something like November 04. I haven't had the problem yet but I bought the car with 90km (54mi) in Dec and have just a bit under 93km (55800mi) now. My tranny seems fine but I was thinking of getting some service done to it. I thought I read on these or other forums before not to flush because of its effect on synchros. (not sure how its spelled) So I was thinking of doing a drain and refill and maybe getting the above mentioned filter changed. Any advice on what services to do and how to avoid these severe problems? I got about 4000mi left on warranty and since I only do about 600mi a month I have a little time.
Getting concerned.....
Starting noticing a distinct click sound and feeling whenever I am slowing down to a stop, so I guess its when my 5AT is downshifting to first. Did anyone find this before happening before the transmission failed?

Nah, just a hard slam one day. Clicking sound could be a lot of things, just keep an eye on it figure where it's coming from then we can see if there is a fix here on the .org
Wondering if this is a tranny problem...
Very weird...I had my mechanic check to see if the DRL and fog lights were burnt out. I told him there was a faster way to reach the bulbs by taking the air intake out. So he took it out and checked it. Turns out they were both burnt out. So he put the air intake back in and I told him I was going to come back and replace the bulbs. When I turned the car on, the "service engine soon" and "VDC OFF" lights were on and wouldn't go away. As I shifted from park to reverse, the whole car jumped, shifted back to park, and it jumped again. He popped the hood, I shifted again, and you could see the entire engine jump. So this concerned me because when I was driving there I had no lights on and no issues with the car at all. So he took the air intake out again and put it back in. I turned the car on again and the only thing different is the VDC light was gone and the car didn't jump. So I took it for a spin and the car drove fine again, but the only thing is the "service engine soon" light was still on. So I am wondering if I should worry and if my tranny is about to go. My 04 Maxima has 130,000KM. Thanks.

Oh I know its coming from the gear box area, I can feel it everytime before I nearly come to a stop, I can especially feel it if my hand is on the gear selector or resting near the gear box. I was just wondering if anyone noticed anything like this early on before there tranny failed. No hard shift yet, hopefully its nothing.
My car just got back from a 1000 mile trip. My clutch pedal was acting fine all the way until I got back into my city. Then, the clutch pedal starting making crunching noises, the gears were not grinding. When I pressed it down it was getting pretty stiff. Does anyone know what the solution to this problem could be? My car has 63,400 miles on it and it is a 2005 Maxima SE 6 Speed.
you guys think putting a brand new tranny will make any difference? or it will be the same as a rebiuld one that will not last? my car is sttill drivable and im debating if im going to replace it with a brand new tranny or just trade it in which i really dont want too..... any judgestion guys?
I recommend taking the current transmission and having all the internals replaced, buying a new Torque converter with higher stalls, and buying a new valve body and having it reworked to add a bigger boost valve, and maybe even sending it to get machined by http://www.ipttrans.com/nissanauto.shtml#main . This is in my list of things to get done as well. I think to even be on a safer side send it to get dipped by http://www.cryoplus.com/motorsports.html or a similar company. There are many out there. This will strengthen the valvebody which appears to be the weakest part of the transmission. You could even send in the metal interior parts to get dipped as well providing even more strength. IPT says they can repair the valvebody to withstand up to 400whp and a good amount of torque. I have tried to get info out of them seeing that they are the only company who does this type of work that I could find, but did not have too much success concidering they did not care enough to send a list of services they provide.

they told me they can do any auto trans. If you look at the site it says if you can't find a shift kit for your automatic nissan contact us. they say not a problem yet when I requested a list of things they can do for a 5 speed they didn't produce. Maybe it was the guy I was talking to that dropped the ball. Give it a shot maybe you will have better luck with them.

here it is http://forums.maxima.org/6th-generat...-start-up.html no pics but instructions. The sensors are located on the right side of the engine. there is a pic of them in the service manual which you can get from Nissanhelp.com.

$2700 is a lot but I think in the big picture not too bad. I don't even think their are any alternatives are there? Stuck with another dealer tranny.
I really wish someone would come out with a kit etc that beefed them up. The would have a market for sure because you can tell by the poll numbers that a certain percentage of them are failing.

im so tired of this autotragic that I kicked it to the curb , in the process of doing a 6spd swap.
I will be posting my 5AT 2004 Tranny for sale soon, has 27k miles on it , as soon as I get it back from the shop

Might as well put my story up. Bought the 04 maxima SE with 114K miles and it would shift down very roughly while also jumping when putting it in into Drive. I knew trans rebuild was necessary, now after 15K miles im thinking of doing trans flush just to keep on the safe side. I have to say I am still not happy with how the trans shift in this car. I have driven manual cars most of my life but also had couple automatics like IS300 and X5 and none of them shifted so ****ty as the maxima. Bottom line is the trans is crap it feels like driving with a time bomb. I like the car itself but the trans makes me want to get only manual cars from now on.

I have had my 5speed tranny flushed twice and I did a drain and fill once. Nissan has the equipment and so do most shops. The flush lines are connected to the fill tube and the drain plug connection. Don't do it though. I recommend you get a new tranny filter and replace the filter along with draining and filling.
http://forums.maxima.org/6th-generat...-4-begins.html I am at work so I can't view these pictures but I am pretty sure that there is a picture with internal parts to include the tranny filter in it. Keep in mind these are parts for the 5 AT not 4 speed.

I have the 5 speed model. I am guessing a flush would be better then drain and fill if that is possible. I was looking into the trans coolers they don't seem as if they cost a lot so maybe it is worthy to get one? Also I never heard of trans filter.
Don't waste your money. If there are no transmission lines running to the radiator, then how are you going to install a transmision cooler?
