6MT Tranny Whine?

hearing a whine from my 6MT coming from the tranny itself. not very loud..can only hear it with windows closed and radio and climate control off. the whine is lower pitched the higher the gear... when the clutch in..moving...shift from a gear into neutral the whine goes away like drops down in pitch and stops. shift back into gear..whine comes back. sounds like u can hear the synchros. been happening for awhile now..no probs with the tranny except the occasional 3rd gear crunch. running redline oil..barely 30K on the oil. This could mean my tranny is on it's way out?

Have you had the tranny oil level checked it could be low/not filled high enough. Possibly the drain plug or fill plug is not tight enough causing it to leak or air pressure coming out from the gears/fluid moving inside. Just something to check out .

My vote would be for a bearing as well.

if you are below 60k take it to the dealer. It should be covered under warranty.

ok well i am at 93K lol so dealer would never fix the problem. i can deal with the whine but I cant deal with rebuilding or getting a new tranny. not right now at least.

You should be alright, once it starts to get very loud is when you'll need to worry about it alot.

I agree that it is very likely a bad bearing. The whine you hear is caused by the gears not meshing squarely. The noise is the result of the gears wearing unevenly due to the bearing throwing the gear very slightly off. You may easily be able to live with this as long as you keep the car. But as the noise increases (as the bearing continues to fail) the gears will get more out of line, increasing the noise level. You may eventually need to replace more than the bad bearing if you ever get this tranny fixed -- some gears may also need to be replaced.

I have 36 K miles on my Redline trannie fluid in my 6-speed. This synthetic fluid should help minimize the wear you are causing on your gears by running with a bad bearing.
