5 SPD AT

Noticed the other day driving under a full load there is a serious delay in shifting gears from 1st to 2nd the is a big delay, 2ND to 3RD shifts quick but fells like it's a standard from there out seems ok. I have not owned a automatic car for a very long time is this normal for the Max or do I have a tranny problem? Thank you in advance. Car only has 42k on her.

I don't know anymore. My Max has 49000 now, and I've had it for 1,500 miles. It will give me shift shock like I'm driving a manual when it downshifts. Nobody riding in the car would likely take notice, but I do after driving my mom's (smooth as silk) 2002 Monte Carlo SS. GM can sure make auto transmissions, but I'm still not quite sure what to think about this Nissan. 99% of the time it's fine, but that 1% worries me.

Have they thrown any check engine lights at you? I would take it in to the dealer, your both under the 60k warranty. Get the problem documented and have them check it out. I just had my 5AT replaced at 56k miles underwarranty. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=546174

I bought my Maxima used, so I don't think I have the original Nissan warranty.

If you are under 60k it should be covered but I'm not sure. Maybe someone here knows for sure. All else fails just call Nissan and ask.

No check engine lights as of yet, but I do get a rough down shift to first if I'm using the trip tronic.

GM can sure make auto transmissions,
GM transmissions are **** compared to the 6th gen max's. Drive that "ss" hard for long and it will start slipping in no time. The Maxima can handle 10x the abuse that GM can. I used to own an Impala and drive it the way I do my Max. I had the Imp for 40K then the tranny went out. I'll never buy a GM car again. Max is still strong as ever at 75K.

+1

American trannys are the worst and I'm not just bashing domestic.

I have 70k miles on my auto and it shifts pretty good. The major problem I have with the Nissan tranny is the unpredictability of the torque converter; there's speculation that the TC actually unlocks at some point under hard accelleration which is no good.

Some of the more expensive Euros claim to lock the TC most of the time.

I guess my biggest concern is the slippage I think it does shift from 1st to 2nd there is a huge lage in shift time and slips into gear 3rd is pretty solid accually jerks the car. And the groan I get when first starting and driving the car there is groaning noise and a vibration in the car at slow speed the it goes away. So i'm probally going to make an appoitment at the dealer for Saturday If I can get one.

The auto LS1 camaro, gto's, and corvette's don't have very many problems. BMW used auto gm transmissions for a while too. You wouldn't believe how many people are up in arms about the 5AT on the Maxima.

4L65-E is the main tranny behind the LSx motors, same basic tranny they've used for a long time in vette's and F body's. Far superior to their front wheel drive transmissions. Hopefully this dang CVT will last a long time or if it goes, does so before my 75k warranty expires.

So how do you guys think before the Maxima gets a dual clutch transmission like the GT-R?

And a rear-mounted gear box too?

How many? I read about some problems here and there, but it doesn't appear to be a pandemic.

Not a pandemic but too many threads about people's transmissions doing weird things. Something isn't right.

I see several people have had issues with their tranny. Some, like you, got theirs replaced. I'm not suggesting that they are trouble free, but some "weird things" are normal a part of auto tranny. When you step on the gas and you get a delay and a clunk, you have a problem. Intermitten rough shifts can be disutrbing, but it doesn't always mean a problem. The 60k miles tranny service interval is too long, check your fluid regularly and change it more often, especially if you see dirt and fliud smells burnt or if you drive hard.

What I was told by Nissan is the Max is geared to shift harder and more sporty like because it is a sport sedan. He said most people who drive automatic usually think there is something wrong b/c most auto trannies are geared to be smooth and unnoticeable. So it is part of the "sportiness" of the max. however if you think there is something wrong it is covered until 60,000 or 5 yrs

I thought it was the 4l60-e? Just a variant of the 700r4 but electronic.The
4l65-e is in the trucks. Nevermind

In a nutshell, the L65 differs from the 4L60-E in these ways:
* Five-pinion gears for input and reaction gearsets (versus four-pinion gears in the L60)
* Heat-treated stator shaft splines
* Induction hardened turbine shaft
* Heavier-duty low/reverse roller clutch
* Additional friction plate added to 3-4 clutch (seven plates versus six in L60)
* Shot-peened output shaft
* Revised valve body calibration

Guess it depends on the year as I had a 4l60-e in my ls1.

I have read reviews from magazines when the '04 came out were the SL is smoother than the SE. They explained the SE has a more 'aggressive' transmission and that was one of the reasons for the SE with a 5 spd auto and the SL only with a 4 spd.

42K, may I suggest a tranny oil change!
yes, the triptronic mode has a firmer shifting.
And some have reported bad motor mounts.

Or see the dealer. Engine & Tranny covered until 60K.
