Can I use 17 inch winter tires?

Can I buy 17 inch rims and mount 17 inch winter tires on the max?

What does it change?
Better in the snow?

Why have 18 inch tires instead of 17 inch, even in the summer?

Thx

I am rollin on 17” winters, and have seen 18” winters, so

It changes handling, not very tight, speed rating typically drops down to Q, if you're lucky S.

17" wheels/tire are easier to move, so you get a little more power to the ground and better MPG.

Bigger looks better. 17's for maximum handling/speed. Bigger you go more wheel to move/bigger diameter.

Here are some calculations showing the rim+tire diameter of the stock 17" and 18" wheels. Surprisingly, the 17" has the larger diameter (just 0.06" larger).

[Ref: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=7]

section height = width * aspect ratio

section height of P225/55R17 = 225/25.4 * 0.55 = 4.87"
section height of P245/45R18 = 245/25.4 * 0.45 = 4.34"

Overall rim+tire diameters:
17" + 2*4.87" = 26.74"
18" + 2*4.34" = 26.68"

Note that each 18" rim+tire weighs a few more lbs than each of the 17" rim+tire.
