Dyeing Seats?

Has anyone tried dyeing the stock leather seats or at least a portion of the seats? I have a silver 04 with black leather and am thinking about dying center section of bottom and seat back a grey to break it up a bit.

What exactly do you mean by dyeing? I hope it's not what I think it might be.

Hahaha, nevermind.....

Doing a two-toned type of thing? Always liked that mod. Sets the interior off very nicely.

I want to keep the factory seats with the airbags but just want to dye the middle of the seats to get a two tone look like custom aftermarket seat. Leave the pillows(or whatever you call them)on the sides of the seats black. Just a thought!

You do know that if you were to get after-market leather seats, then you would still have the air-bags, yeah?

All they would be replacing is the seat COVER, not the entire seat, or w/e you are maybe thinking.

I have never heard/read of anyone doing this, but you could be a first? Quality seat covers aren't that much either...just a couple hundred for good leather.

I didn't think about them offering custom leather covers for the factory seats but I do know that body shops have been dyeing interior components and you cannot tell that they have ever been dyed. It is alot cheaper.

Yeah, I've seen this done at my dealership and it looks very good, but you can feel where he patched it up because of the different materials.

I used to dye alot of carpet.

It shouldn't be too hard.

I be afraid of it rubbing off on everything though...

I talked to a friend of mine at a custom body shop and he told me that he had done leather seats before and that the dye is not suppose to rub off. After applying the dye it is coated with a sealer that helps bond dye to leather. Dye alone would have cost 49.95 before shipping and my friend told me he would do front and back for 100. I will probably let him do this in the near future and I will post pictures to let everyone see how it turns out.

Mt dad dyed his leather seats in his z32 like you are talking about. They came out really professional looking I think you should go for it.

my understanding of dyeing is when something is light and you make it darker (add color)

bleaching will destroy the seats (seams)

Good luck and have fun, but do have an ebay auction for replacements ready in your "watched" items.
