TPMS Sensors on an 08 SL with aftermarket wheels???

OK, I finaly made the purchase on the wheels. I got some 18 inch Ziniks. I love em. Now for the headache....I purchased new TPMS Sensors for my wheels, Keeping the stock ones as is. I spent a fortune on these sensors so the idiot light would not come on. Well I drive 20 miles on the new wheels and the light comes on. What's the deal with this? I know a bunch of you have wheels...are you getting the same problem? Does the dealer need to reset something? The local shop where I purchased the wheels from said I wouldn't run into this problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

Sorry in advance...if i posted this in the wrong thread..just want responses from those with same year vehicle....

so do i need to go to the dealer for a recalibration? the place i bought the wheels said they have some tool to do it. not sure if i should waste any more time with them or hit the dealer up....any ideas on what the dealer will charge for that?

Well, being that you spent the $$$ for the sensors, of course get them calibrated. Just be sure to drive the car 20 miles right after you get the service done. Sometimes they don't get it right the first time and then U can immediately go back.

But in all honesty, the TPMS is a pia and you could have gotten away without the extra expense.

Reb, is it a better idea to transfer the TPMS from the stock wheels to the new wheels instead of purchasing new sensors? If the existing sensors are transferred, will they still need calibration?

Here is what I believe to be accurate about TPMS. If your vehicle is equiped with VDC, a TPMS indicator light on dash will deactivate the VDC. The TPMS can be calibrated to recognize two sets of sensors. So you can switch between sets of tires. Removing a set of sensors calibrated for a specific set of tires and putting them on a new set may require recalibration for the new tires.

Reb - thanks for this info..it's good to know. I decided to go with additional sensors based on the fact that you spend so much on a new car and new wheels you might as well spend a few extra bucks on sensors.. I'm going to call the wheel shop and set up a time to recalibrate the wheels. fingers are crossed!!! I'm almost to the point that i want him to remove the sensors, deal with the light, and get my money back for the sensors..lol

not sure of an exact price but you shouldn't expect it to be much. it only takes about 10-15 minutes.

That's such an azzhole comment man. Have some respect for peoples taste. You don't have to like them cuz they aint on your ride. A simple "not my taste" would have done just fine, but I didn't ask for your opinion anyways. I simply responded to another users request to see pics of them.

Take your misery somewhere else!!!

right, in complete agreement with you.

I checked out your pics and I like that Stillin SS grill you have. Do they make it for an 08 max? or will it fit the 08 max? I went to their website but couldn't find the grill by searching by my year and make...I think they just had the T-Rex grill..that black powerdcoat looks sweet.

Looks nice Thanks for the pic.

BTW, I like the 07-08 stock grill more than any other grill I have seen till now, of course including the 09 grill. But thats just my choice.

Thanks I dont think stillen makes one yet for the 07...but you should call them and ask for a catalog...they always seem to have a lot more products in their catalogs than what you see online.

Bryguy dont worry about the negative responses you may get about your wheels. Everyone is not going to agree with what you like. Hell, i asked opinions on a set im getting and this is one of the negative responses i got from member USAF-LT-G (junior member)......"Sorry man... I don't like either option. I think they're both FUGLY. Just seem to ghetto for my taste".....GHETTO?!?..i could have went there but why bother. I didnt even respond to it. You must remember that if you post pics you take the chance that someone will say something you might not like. Keep it moving i say. Btw, good luck with the tpms issue. My boy is going through the same thing with his 07 avalon.

Thanks lowpro.....yeah this tpms thing has been nothing less then a huge headache. Looks like i'm dealing with this wheel shop on Monday. Hopefully he can recalibrate them and get me going. If I learn of anything new I'll let you know...maybe it will help your boy figure out his Avalon...I'm interested in seeing which wheels you are buying...pm me and let me know if you don't mind. I wont give you negative feedback..lol.. as long as you chose them based on your liking and not others..if you think they look good, then they look good... i seen a post on here - some guy did black chrome on his stock wheels. they looked nice. was thinking about doing that on my stock wheels for winter. cuz i hate tossing stock wheels back on the ride after roll'n on chrome...

FINALY GOT THEM FIXED. Thanks to all of your for tossing out your thougts on the resolution to my problem. Most of you were right about having the sensors recaliborated. The guy at the wheels shop did not have the correct TPMS tool for my vehicle. I went back to the Nissan dealer where I purchased the Sensors and they fixed them for a small cost. Fingers are crossed!!!! Total spent so the light wont show up in error on my display = $385.00. I suggest if you are dealing with the same issue I was that you save yourself $400 and let the light shine.

I'm almost positive that if your car has VDC, driving with a TMPS illuminated defeats the VDC. Something to think about

I went thru the same hell to get the tpms lamp to stay off.

Lotsa ways to do it... this is probably as simple as it gets (if you are Windows based):

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

Download and install Image Resizer PowerToy. Lets you instantly resize any pic or multiple pics just by right clicking on the pic and select "Resize Image" - no programs to load or learn how to use.

BTW... drove with the TPMS light on for nearly a year before dealer could get it to stay cleared. Been good for last 10 months, though. Keepin' fingers crossed.

Thanks for the heads up reb...So your light is finally off?

Does anyone know more info on this, if the VDC is affected when you removed the TPMS's? I simply thought the sensors were just monitoring tire pressure and nothing else...

Can't you take the sensors from the existing wheels and put them in the new wheels? In that way, you do not need to calibrate them. Or am I simplifying things too much?

That would have been an option if I didn't live in Illinois. But the winters around here are terrible on chrome. Therefore, I kept the OEM sensors that came with the car in the stock wheels. To make it easy on me and just swap wheels back when the snow comes.

Oh, and I resolved the problem. I simply returned the TPMS Sensors to the dealer for a full refund. I'll drive with the light for now.....

bryguy1822..... I am new to this forum and wanted to reply to your issue with the TPMS light. I too have 2 sets of wheels with 2 sets of sensors. You need to go back to the dealer and have them re register the sensor to your car again. I had to do that everytime I switch the wheels out for the season. My dealership does it for me for free, only takes less than 5 minutes. I just got it done last week for the summer. Hope this helps....

Thanks for letting me know... I did go to the dealer and have them register the new sensors in the new wheels. The light went off but came back on the next day. So it's just another headache for me....I decided to drop the sensors and get my money back. At least I'll know the light is on because no sensors are installed..lol..

what he was saying if that when the dealer registered your new wheels. the info for the old or stock wheels is erased. so you need to get your stock wheels re registered.
