SES p0420!!

My SES light came on a few weeks ago; it threw the fuel cap code, EVAC leak large, or something like that. Cleared it. About a week later it came on again, but gave me P0420 Cat Converter Operating Below Threshold (Bank 1).

I called the dealership and set up an appointment, I am under 80k so I was not too upset b/c I knew the Cat Converter would be covered under warranty. However, the light just went off yesterday, and my appointment is in the morning. They told me the light has to be on or there is nothing they can do!

Any suggestions? Should I take it in anyway and have them look at it, or just wait and see if the SES light comes back on? Also, I am getting a slight squeak, sounds like a belt or something right after I turn my car on and drive about 30 seconds, then no other problems. Anyone have any ideas what is going on?

Any help is greatly appreciated from you guys, and gals.

Thanks,

On my old 5th gen used to have the same problem. The cat would be getting clogged and then would burn out whatever it was clogging it and the CEL would go away. I eventually got the cat replaced with a rebuilt cat. Could be something similar.

After I removed my main cat on the y pipe I threw a p0420 which was odd as there is no O2 sensor behind that cat. i erased the code and alas nothing since. Been about 8 months. you belts may need a changin or at the least a tighten.

As soon as it comes back, don't clear it, take it in. If you have to replace a pre-cat outside of warranty, it can get expensive.
