Nismo CAI Installed... Quick Question ??????

Hey guys...

I didn't find a thread to ask this Q in, so I decided to start one. I just installed my Nismo CAI on my 04 max few hours ago. It took me about 20 mins to install . I didn't install/use ALL the pipes that came with the kit, and I did it short on purpose. My question is, does it really matter if it was long pipe or short? Does it, being short, effect the sound or performance at all?

Let me know please so I can make any adjustments needed.

Thanks

im sure the differences in length would give a differnt sound. sounds like you made more of a short ram intake, which are nice too. but usually get a lot of warm air rather than the cold air, which... is the point of a cold air intake and thats why all the pipes are so long and usually lead out of the engine bay.

I have the Nismo intake and I once removed the last piece that holds the filter. I placed my filter were the bypass filter sits and used it like that for a couple of days. It sounded louder since the filter was now sitting up higher. I did notice slight increase of power on take off, but nothing big. I suggest you find a way of securing the intake well since the last tube that goes to the bottom of the bumper has the piece that secures it to the car's chassis. You dont want your intake to just hold from the throtle.

Should I extend it to go out of the engine bay? I was thinking since the front plastic piece that directs the air toward the instake is transfering cold air to the filter itself, it would be ok if i left it short ram. I went for a drive last night, and it sounds sweeeeeeetttttt. Let me know what you guys think.

Looks awesome man! but i still think you should have went long to get the cold air in. That snorkle is not really gonna push that much air into the filter.

Thanks bro...I'll probably do that tomorrow. I didn't have that much time when I installed this. I only did it in 15 mins or so, but I'll connect the rest of it tomorrow hopefully. I love the way it sounds now,is the filter being behind the bumper gonna effect the sound of it at all???

i think you'll get a louder sound with the short air intake, but the idea is to get a cooler oxygen mixture and the long pipe would do that.

Alright... I installed all the pipes in the kit and yes it's behind my bumper. It doesn't sound as loud or as mean lol... it's kind of faded to almost normal engine sound, but I guess that'll benefit it more, so I'll stick to the full installation instead of the short ram... I'll post pics...

The thing i like about your Nismo intake is that you can convert it anytime you want to a short air ram like if you goin to a car show and you want it a little more loud or if it's raining really really bad and the area you live at is flooded that's perfect. I'm pretty much stuck with the fujita, cause i can't convert that. But i still love it.

Cool... That was one of the reasons why I went with Nismo... flexible, and you can make it whichever way you like it to be. I was hesitant about making the filter be behind my bumper becuz when the filter mounts, my plastic that covers the wheel well under the fender is broken, so I had to go buy a new plastic cover to make sure no dirt, etc to get into the filter.

That is clean bro. I'm currently working on making it short ram and building a heat barrier to make it cold air. Once I'm done I will share pics and instructions on how to do it in case you want to do the same.

Cool pics. Looks good in there. I was hoping you would drive around with the short version for a while and then switch so you could give us an overall evaluation of stock vs short ram vs cai.

Congrats on your new mod.

I can tell you now, it does make a diff. Short ram sounds better...meaner. You can tell from the roar you get when you rev your engine that it has an intake system. Even when you accelerate, it sounds awsome, and you can notice the power.

When you extend the arms to make it a full ram, the roaring sound fades... you can tell it has a CAI system if you listen closely... but otherwise... you can't that much diff in sound... at least not too obvious. But I guess if I make it short... it'll defeat the purpose of having a "Cold" air intake... becuz it'll be inhaling the warm air around the engine bay.

That's just my opinion. I Hope that helps. Knowing me, I'll probably go back to short ram once I figure out a way to somewhat block off the warm air..

I don't buy into the CAI theory.

For my HAI/WAI/Short ram,

I base my opinion that once the car starts moving faster than 10 MPH, the IAT is 1-3ºF above ambient, so not much room for cooling there. At a stop, it is 10-15ºF warmer.

NmexMAX: that's a good point, I'm going to switch to short ram at some point just to check it out. I will test it out at the track when I do though.

04MAXXXFreak: thank for the advice. My CAI is as loud as I want to go. :-) Deus made a sweet block of plate for his short ram, maybe he'll post a pic or search around for it.

So I was better off with the short ram? or should I leave it full extension?

Do whichever you like, but as you said, it's nice to have that option.

There is a place that I bought it from... it's $215.00 shipped... I'm not sure what kind of price range you had in mind... but if that price is cool with you, I'll give you the phone number to order it. It's a Nissan dealer too... not a cheapo store around town :-)

Looks more cleaner, Install wise.

And Can I have the number please? 215 sounds pretty much like a steal to me.

On my car i decided one day to convert it to the ram air (i have the Injen CAI) and I noticed a power loss at top end because of the hot air the intake is not sucking in.. let me remind you tho that I dont have any of the existing stock air duct on so i had nothing directing cold air.. once i put it back to Cold air it made a noticeable difference.. sounds great tho!

I love mine also, Installed it on Saturday. There is a little growl but hard to hear but it's there.
The CAI VS short ram has been a debate for a long time but I beleive in this the cooler the air
the smaller the molecules are and the more air that you engine can take in why do you think
NOS frezzes the air to ram as much air as possiable into the engine. SO IMO CAI is always better..
My 2 cents
