Window Tint - State Laws

http://www.tintdude.com/laws.html

I checked out this site, and see every state is drastically different, but Im trying to understand the %. The higher the number, the lighter the tint(easier you can see in)?

is that the case?

pretty much, I have 15% all around which means only 15% light is let in, the lower the number the darker the tint, but I have a black car with a black interior so my 15% may look darker, then if I had a tan interior, but I've been told black cars with tint kinda blend in and don't look so obvious

It's just luck, I've been stopped twice and the cops just made sure I had my car registered and insured and they let me go, both liked the tint

True, I am at 55% with mine and it is a VERY light tint. State law in NC is 35%, so I could have gone a bit darker, but wife would not go for it. And I get the honor of paying an extra $10 every year at inspection time.

yea its true the higher the more visible it is. So 0 % is like a limo tint. yea the cops really just give you a warning if anything. I got 20% which is illegal in MD but it flows with my car, and thats more important.

the percentage means what light is allowed in... 55% = only 55% of light is let in.. 10% = only 10% of light is let in.

its 32% here in GA i believe. but i have 15% on mine. i love it.

you also loose some light transmission from the window itself. I have 5% all around and when it got tested it was 2.5%.

I like that nobody can see in but i have to watch out a little for police. They tend to have better things to do than bust you for window tint though, kind of like front plate violations

I got pulled over in the middle of nowhere utah which is where i found out the light transmission was 2.5% but the tint tickets here at only $40-$50 (i cant remember what i paid but it was either $40 or $50) here so no big deal.

Never had a problem in the city, only in the middle of nowhere where the cops have nothing better to do.

Many newer cars come through with somewhere between 70-90% tint on the windows just to reduce glare, most don't notice it but it's their

Cops are cool, I've noticed if you drive past the police station where cops park their personal cars many of them are tinted probably why many of them overlook tint if everything checks out, country cops are just a different breed altogether, that don't care if your a cop, a retired cop, your just another driver

so true. 5% all around ftw. The only thing they care about down here is front windshield tint... Banners are ok, just dont tint the entire windshield. It makes them angry.

Then again, florida is sunny as hell and we really need the tint.

I currently have 18% and have a hard time seeing out the windows to back up at night so I wouldn't go any lower. Live in Hawaii and the state law here is 35% (+/- 6%). Never pulled over for the tint. Blends nicely with the ONYX car color.

yea I usually do, but when it's pouring out not really an option. I just honk the horn and back real slowly. Thinkin about changin the reverse lights to the led ones and seeing if that helps.

brighter reverse lights help a ton. i have them and they are noticable brighter then the stocks. you can also throw HIDs in the reverse light which is probably the best option. and seeing as HID kits are only a bill it's probably the best option vs spending $50 on LEDs.

i agree with the 5% being a pain to see at night. ive come very close to hitting the neighbors mailbox a few times. i think i will try the HIDs in the reverse lights

wow HID reverse lights huh... Does anyone have these and if so can they post a link for where to get them and an install guide. TIA "Thanx in Advance". Jetsfan2008 I apologize if I am thread jacking. Just figured this was important to think about when considering tinting the windows.

there is a guy on the org who has em. you just need to buy an HID kit for whatever type of bulb is back there. and obviously mount the ballasts and do the wiring. i'd consider it myself but mine(upgraded) work good enough 90% of the time.

OMG!! Tint can ruin your life depending on the state and its laws last I check robing a bank is the only thing worst LOL. But seriously be careful in MD the legal is 35% and I had 20 on my old car got pulled over one time by a county pig and he drew his gun on me because I didn't roll the window down fast enough. I want tint on the max so bad but not ready for the headache again...oh and note got so irritated with getting pulled over I peeled the tint of myself then got rid of the car glue on the windows and all. LMAO

Thought I would share, just got a tint ticket in Virginia, he gave me the option of reckless driving, or speeding with a tint ticket state trooper was cool and I went with the speeding and tint cause the reckless driving I would have to return and appear in court.

No big deal, I knew I was not gonna talk my way out of the ticket cause I was out of state, so it was easy revenue and even the cop was like just pay it, the speeding was 15 over and was like $160 and the tint was $30 bucks

It was my brothers 300 with 5%, but the tint detector the cop used said 4%, he goes to school in ATL and we live outside the city in NY and both places we have never had tint problems other then the cops occasionally stopping me, but my Max has 15%

What some people miss about auto window tinting is that many of todays cars already come with some sort of UV or glare guard which is of a tint grade. When you add lets say a 35% tint, plus add the OEM tint, your car may actually be 30% tint thus many people unknowingly are out side of their states tint law limits. The good news is most cops aren't too **** about the slight offset, it the 20% offset that will lighten your pockets!!!

I went by law reqirements and put 35% on my '04 and I wish I had gone down to at least 30%. Not real happy about the results but it's done now!

I had my tints done all around (except front glass) to 35% over the summer. Last week while driving into NYC from NJ, I was pulled over by an NY cop who told me my tint's looked too dark. He then proceeded to take out a meter and measure the tint level. The meter returned the number of 30% which he said was below the limit of 35%. As soon as I saw that, my knee-jerk reaction was to dispute it and say it was definitely 35%. But then I realized the same thing you mentioned, there was probably a subtle tint from the factory & it's being multiplied by the added tint. So I kept my mouth shut & just yes sir'd him. HA! Long story short the cop let me go on the fact that I had NJ plates and he said he was unaware of the NJ state laws regarding tints. Funny thing is, according to State laws of NJ, Driver side glass & passenger side glass tinting is prohibited. Also, I learned when I went for my inspection sticker that since my third break-light is on the interior behind glass, it's also prohibited for this to be obstructed by any tint. Can't stand Tri-state tint law! Usually I never get hassled, but I can tell when the traffic cops are out in full force trying to make quota for the month, they'll use any excuse to get a few bucks out of you.
