Actually, it's only recently that it's becoming clear that the cause of the tranny going bad is the valve body--even Nissan only issued a TSB on it in April. So, once you begin to notice hard shifts or slippage, it is advisable to change (or repair?) the VB before damage is done to the tranny itself. Now, this problem is common with the 5speed tranny, and not so with the 4speed. The four speed are found only in 04 SL. So if you must buy an 04, I'll advise the 4speed SL; if not, be prepared to change the VB someday, as you begin to reach 90k miles plus.

Both are 2006's, do the transmission problems because less frequent with 06 thru 08s?

Nope, it's 04-06; 07-08 are CVT and so far no serious issues reported.

Wow, I really appreciate the info. The car I'm actually getting is a 4 speed SL. They're so nice I've been depressed for the last two days after I found out about the problem thinking I'd have to pass on it.

Well in that case, I should say it's a safe buy, provided the car itself is in good condition, and hoping you too will observe regular and necessary maintenance. For the 4speed tranny the recommended ATF is Nissan Matic D, part# 999MP-AA100P.

Bought my Maxima in Dec.05 with 73 miles on it and I currently have 101K on it. Still runs and looks good just starting to have a few issues: jerky transmission and funny noise coming from strut tower area( mainly right side) even after replacing them(struts) this spring. Sounds like a clunking noise going over speed bumps or rough roads. By the way I just joined this site yesterday and have learned quite a bit about my car in a short period of time. Good to know I'm not the only one that loves my "MAX" and wants to keep it running for years to come!

I'm far from an expert, but could it be a bushing or wheel bearing?

I had my transmission replaced in the 04 while it was still under warranty.

I am having that noise over speed bumps and rough roads and was wandering what it was?? So it's the struts??

Sooo...That "clunking" noise at startup is the timing chain?? At 144 K miles, I am not suprised!!

We actually just replaced it July 2010 with close to 300k miles on it. It was just starting to jerk a lil, wasn't major though.

I'm at exactly 210917. I've been running synthetic oil since about 20k miles and it runs and shifts as good as the day I bought it. I also switched over to Royal Purple synthetic ATF at around 120k miles. I switched over to the synthetic atf becuase 1) Its still cheaper than the Nissan stuff from the dealer and 2) It seemed like the trans fluid was always burnt when I drained it. I'm convinced the ATF cooling system is not sufficeint for the the car.
