Help....How to for cv axle replacement
Help....How to for cv axle replacement
My wifes 2004 Max is making a grinding noise in the right frt side. I noticed that all of the grease has been slung out of the torn CV boot. With the sound that it is making, I'm replacing the cv axle not just the boot. I did this on my Pontiac GTP. How much different can it be?
Is there a good write up for this? I've searched but just maybe not in the right place. I wanted one specifically for the 2004. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Dean

- disconnect lower ball joint
- disconnect tie rod end
- remove axle nut
- remove threaded end from wheel bearing/steering knuckle
- use a small pry bar to "pop" the shaft out of the transmission.
- reassemble in reverse order.
- torque axle nut to specification to properly load the bearing
if the shaft is seized into the wheel bearing DO NOT HIT THE END WITH A HAMMER. you will damage the threads with a missed swing or mushroom the end making the install impossible.
do not disassemble the top of the knuckle/bottom of strut, instead of the ball joint unless you are prepared to do an alignment after.
